TVS Jupiter launched in India at Rs 44,200

TVS has launched the Jupiter, the third scooter in its line-up, in Chennai today at Rs 44,200 ex-showroom Delhi. Built on the Wego platform, the Jupiter is targeted towards male buyers. The Wego is a tad small and TVS didn't have a larger scooter till now causing it to fall behind in the fast growing scooter market. With the Jupiter, TVS will have a wider market to cater to.

The stylish new scooter gets twin city lamps and LED tail lamps. At the heart of the Jupiter is the same single cylinder aluminium 110cc engine from the Wego that produces 8bhp of power and 8Nm of torque. TVS claims a fuel economy figure of 62kmpl from its latest entrant by optimising the CVT transmission for fuel efficiency. The Wego also now boasts of 62kmpl.

The Jupiter sports 12 inch black alloy wheels, external fuel filler at the rear like the Wego, a full face helmet storage space under its seat and a mobile charging point. TVS has also equipped the Jupiter with pass lights, and the company's patented 'Econometer' tech that guides riders to choose between eco and power modes.

The Jupiter will be available in four colours -  grey, white, red and black. The launch scooter finished in matt grey looks particularly good.

TVS chief Venu Srinivasan says the company will have 20,000 Jupiters ready by Diwali to cash in on the festive season with 4,000 units already shipped to dealers today. To begin with, the Jupiter will be sold in the north of India, soon to be followed by a southern India launch around Diwali. The company is targeting to produce 10,000 units every month and has the capacity to scale up to 20,000 units if needed.

Srinivasan also announced at the launch that the company will launch the Scooty Zest, another variant of the Scooty series, on January 1,  2014.
