Volkswagen showcases ID.Code concept SUV
Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its latest concept model, the ID.Code. This is a futuristic SUV concept packed with advanced technologies, especially Level 4 autonomy. This modern SUV offers a glimpse of the brand's future design strategy for electric vehicles.
The ID.Code boasts an unusually clear and athletic body design, featuring Volkswagen's new design philosophy focused on stability, likeability, and surprising features. The SUV's exterior showcases a Gran Turismo vibe, with fluid surfaces and advanced AI-assisted lighting and display systems. Further, the ID.Code stands out with its swept-back roofline, streamlined profile, and interactive "Light Cloud with 3D eyes" lighting system.
On the inside, the cabin offers a variable lounge with online connectivity. It features eco-friendly materials, a hi-fi sound system, and ambient lighting. Interestingly, the cabin can adapt to various driving modes, including Level 4 autonomous driving, where the steering wheel retracts, and the seats can rotate or recline for relaxation. Notably, passengers are greeted by LUPO, a robotic vacuum cleaner that emerges during Hygiene mode to disinfect surfaces using UV light.
Volkswagen ID.Code concept: Technology and autonomy
Equipped with advanced sensor, light, camera, and screen systems, the ID.Code claims to support fully automated driving at Level 4. In this mode, the driver becomes a passenger, free to engage in different activities, such as reading or streaming videos. The car's energy needs are met by both a lithium-ion battery and an integrated photovoltaic system on the transparent 'energy roof'.
Volkswagen ID.Code: Plans
For China, Volkswagen is gearing up to launch the ID.UX electric sub-brand, along with the ID.Unyx, a rebranded Cupra Tavascan SUV. The company also intends to collaborate with Chinese firms, such as XPENG to develop local platforms and introduce a minimum of four electric entry-level models by 2026. Additionally, VW plans to debut six hybrid vehicles and twelve new ICE models by 2030.
