Volvo Cars commences production of all-electric EX90
Volvo Cars has begun production of its new all-electric EX90 SUV at its facility outside Charleston, South Carolina. Unveiled in November 2022, it took close to 19 months for the company to start manufacturing of the electric SUV.
The Swedish carmaker aims to commence customer deliveries in the second half of 2024. Interestingly, the first-ever EX90 unit rolled out from the factory was finished in Denim Blue and will be handed over to its owner in the United States later this year. Volvo Cars' first production facility in the US was opened in the summer of 2018. At present, this plant produces the new EX90 and S60 with a capacity to make up to 150,000 vehicles annually.
 Volvo EX90: Range, charging & power outputs
The EX90 comes in three trims across two battery packs: 104kWh and 111kWh. The base trim, equipped with a single rear-axle mounted motor, gets the 104kWh unit with a WLTP range of 580km. This motor makes 275PS and 490Nm.
On the other hand, the other two trims boast a dual-motor setup paired with the 111kWh battery. The Twin Motor version delivers 403PS and 770Nm with a WLTP range of up to 600km. Whereas, the Twin Motor Performance generates 509PS and 910Nm and offers a 590km of range, as per WLTP. The top-of-the-line EX90 can reach 100kmph from a zero in a claimed 4.9 seconds. Meanwhile, the top speed is electronically limited to 180kmph (112mph) across the board.
All trims support up to 250kW DC charging that can charge the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 20 minutes at a suitable charging station given the battery temperature is between 20 and 35 degree celsius. However, the 50kW DC charger can take up to 97 minutes.
Volvo EX90: FeaturesVolvo has bestowed the EX90 with modern-day features, such as a 14.5-inch central information hub with 5G support, a high resolution driver display, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos and headrest integrated speakers, adaptive suspension, Google HD maps compatibility, powered seats with heating and massage functions, and wool-blend or Nordico upholstery (the latter made from recycled materials), among others.
Not to mention, the SUV features eight cameras, a radar, and LiDAR, enabling the EX90 can see 250 meters ahead, irrespective of the time. For this, the company has put together a sophisticated system comprised Nvidia Drive, an in-car computing platform with Xavier and Orin system-on-chips, Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies, and in-house developed software by Volvo engineers. All that runs the key functions inside the car, from safety and infotainment to battery management.
