World EV Day 2021: Top 5 upcoming EVs in India
The electrification of cars is speeding up and every carmaker around the world are effortlessly taking strides to make the switch. India is experiencing the rise of electricity as well with the Tata Nexon EV gaining plenty of traction month on month in the market and the rumours of Tesla coming to India very soon lingering around since 2019.
This World EV day, let's dive into some of the electric vehicles to look forward to in the near future.
Porsche TaycanThe Porsche Taycan is Porsche's first electric car, based on the Mission E concept. The Taycan is expected to be launched in the Indian market towards the end of this year or maybe early next year. Expect the Prices of the Porsche Taycan to begin from Rs 2 crore onwards.
A high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 93.4kWh powers the Taycan mechanically. Under the WLTP cycle, Porsche claims a range of 412 kilometres for the Turbo and roughly 340 kilometres for the Turbo S. The 800-volt design enables rapid charging from 5 percent to 80 percent in 22 minutes.
To make it accurate but approachable, the Taycan is equipped with active air suspension, chassis control, rear-axle steering, torque vectoring, and additional hardware and software.
Tesla Model 3Possibly the most awaited brand to come to India is Tesla. The Tesla Model 3 is also expected to come to India before the year's end, but if not, then early 2022 could be a high possibility. The Model 3 is expected to be priced between Rs 70 to 90 lakh.
The Model 3 is curvaceous and sleek, with flared wheel arches and a coupe-like sloping roofline seen in profile. With LED taillights and a basic bumper design, the rear portion is likewise elegant. The dashboard is the signature simplicity of Tesla with one big tablet screen in the centre that handles all car operations and configurations while also serving as an instrument cluster and infotainment system.
The Tesla Model 3 is powered by one or two electric motors based on the choice of trim and range with the combined horsepower ranging from 285PS to 456PS driving the rear or all four wheels. The Model 3 is capable of driving for over 500kms on a single charge.
Mahindra eKUV100Mahindra too is making presence felt in the EV market and the eKUV100 is soon to come. The car is expected to hit the Mahindra dealerships mid next year. The Mahindra eKUV100 is one of the more affordable electric vehicles on this list with prices expected to start below the Rs 10 lakh mark.
Apart from the badging, the eKUV100 looks like a regular car. On the inside, it's the same storey, but the electric KUV doesn't have a gear lever. The gear lever is no longer an impediment to the six-seater configuration.
The eKUV100is expected to be powered by a 30kW lithium-ion battery pack. With a quick charging feature that can charge to 80% in less than an hour, the vehicle can travel 140 kilometres between charges. When the car is released, however, a new powertrain is expected to be available.
Tata Altroz EVTata has been at the forefront of the electrification of vehicles in India with the Nexon EV. The recently launched Tigor EV is set to add on to that and now Tata is set to launch the Altroz EV. Expected to come later this year or early next year, the Tata Altroz EV is one electric hatch to look forward to.
In terms of appearance, the Altroz EV won't be very different from the Altroz with a combustion engine, except for the obvious EV changes.
The Nexon EV's powertrain is expected to make its way to the Altroz as well. A single 95kw electric motor drives the front wheels and is powered by a 30.2kWh lithium-ion battery. The Altroz EV will have an ambitious range on a single charge, according to Tata, which should be more than the Nexon's ARAI-certified 312km range. When using a fast charger, charging from 0 percent to 80 percent should take around an hour.
Audi e-tron GTAudi has already started accepting bookings for the e-tron GT. It is expected to come to India in September 2021. The Audi e-tron and the Porsche Taycan are pretty similar under the skin so we can expect the Audi to be priced from Rs 2 crore onwards.
Internationally, the e-tron GT is offered in the e-tron GT Quattro, the entry-level model, while the RS e-tron GT is the performance-oriented model. Both trim levels of the e-tron GT come with an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack as standard equipment. The power is transmitted to an electric motor, which generates 475PS in the standard model and 598PS in the RS version.
