Yamaha India recalls 56,082 Ray scooters
India Yamaha Motor (IYM), the Indian arm of Japanese two-wheeler giant Yamaha Motors, is recalling 56,082 units of its scooter 'Ray' to fix a problem with the vehicle's handlebar that in the worst cases may cause hindrance in steering operations. This will be the biggest ever safety recall of two-wheelers in India.
The problem has been identified in the handlebar. The issue is described by the company as "insufficient strength in the handlebar of some scooters due to inadequate welding."
"There is a chance in extreme cases that this might impact the steering operation. As a part of an exercise to rectify the problem, the company will reach out to each individual customer in possession of such scooter to process the recall," said IYM
According to Yamaha, the problem was recognized during field studies of the scooter and the replacement will be done free of cost. "During an extensive study of the product the company found that the handlebar fitted in few Ray scooters was affected by this potential issue. Having identified all such vehicles with this issue, Yamaha has, therefore, decided to voluntarily replace the handlebar in all such scooters. The replacement will be free of charge," added IYM.
The voluntary recall exercise will be done through the 'Ray Refresh Campaign' which will be organized through the company's dealership networks across the country. Customers will be informed via email and phone. The Ray Z model of scooters remains unaffected by this recall.
