ZF sets up its eighth Indian manufacturing unit at Chakan, Pune
Transmission and chassis technology manufacturer, ZF, has set up its eighth plant in the country at Chakan, Pune. The company celebrated the completion of its centennial year by inaugurating the 85,000 square metre facility. The company which is known for developing clutch systems for automobiles says that its Chakan factory has been built with an aim towards contributing to the Make in India effort.
ZF also announced the launch of  its new clutch systems that have been specifically designed for passenger vehicles in India owing to "the demanding driving conditions" here. These will be produced at the Chakan plant as well. The industrial unit is claimed to have an installed capacity of 10 lakh and a strength of 200 employees.
Wilhelm Rehm, board member of ZF Friedrichshafen AG and global head of material management, said, "This new plant is an important investment in the centennial year of ZF Group. The new facility in India reinforces ZF's role as a global player and its commitment of expanding in a growth region like India."
The Chakan unit will also serve as headquarters for ZF's after-market sales and services, engineering and administration. Aside from high performance transmissions, ZF Friedrichshafen AG also produces chassis components. The company has also developed a 9-speed gearbox which is now ready to be adopted in cars.
India, according to ZF, is the second-largest market after China with respect to the automotive, off-highway, windpower and marine segments. ZF's presence in India consists of its eight manufacturing facilities across cities like Pantnagar, Gurgaon, Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai, with around 3,000 employees on its payroll.
Piyush Munot, India managing director, responsible for ZF Group operations in the country, said, "Our strategy will focus on not only bringing advanced technology to India, but in the future to develop products in India for India."

Commenting on the development Rudi von Meister, ZF's President of Asia-Pacific, said: "This multi-product facility will house our Car Powertrain Technology and Commercial Vehicle Technology divisions as well as ZF Services under the same roof. The synergies from this consolidation will enable us to improve efficiencies and help us provide a compelling value proposition to our customers." Today, Asia-Pacific is the most important market for ZF after Europe and North America. After China, India is the second-largest market in the region and caters to various industry segments like Automotive, Off-highway, Windpower and Marine. ZF has been operating for more than three decades in the Indian market. Currently, ZF's presence in India consists of eight plants spread across Pune, Pantnagar, Gurgaon, Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai, and roughly 3 000 employees. The new facility will have approximately 200 employees. It will also be home to the headquarters of the after-market sales and services, engineering and administration of ZF India Pvt. Ltd.
