2016 Hyundai Elantra spotted testing in India

Team OD Updated: June 29, 2016, 01:21 PM IST

Hyundai India will be launching the all-new Elantra in India by August this year. OVERDRIVE reader Sumedh Belsare caught this test mule near Paud Road, Pune, where the car may be doing its ARAI certification rounds.

While the general silhouette is the same as the outgoing car, the new Elantra is bigger than the outgoing model. Hyundai has ditched the Fluidic Design for the new Elantra. The hexagonal grille has become bigger now and is flanked by HID lamps with the dynamic bending property. In place of the fog lamps, there are vertically stacked DRLs.

The side profile shows tauter lines and new alloys have also been brought in. At the rear, the lamp design is all-new and so is the integrated spoiler on the bumper.

Inside the cabin, the new Hyundai Elantra will have updated upholstery and a touchscreen multimedia system. The current Elantra offers an outdated non-touchscreen unit. The new Elantra will have Android Auto as well as navigation in its infotainment system. The steering wheel will house the regular audio, cruise control and Bluetooth functions too. The ventilated front seats, one of the Hyundai Elantra's unique features, will continue on the new model too. The rear seat is expected to be a tad more spacious too.

The powertrain options for the new Hyundai Elantra will continue to be the same but with minor updates. These include 1.8-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines with manual and automatic transmission options. The Hyundai Elantra will continue to be manufactured in India with a couple of parts imported from South Korea.

It is expected to be priced between Rs 14-19 lakh, ex-showroom. We will be driving the new Hyundai Elantra soon. Watch out for our review.

At the Auto Expo 2016, Hyundai India didn't display the new Elantra. Sources say that this was primarily due to the fact that sales of the current car in India were stable and the company didn't want to jeopardise the situation with an all-new offering while units of the old model were still available. The Hyundai Elantra is after all one of the best-selling models in the upper C-segment.
