2024 Austrian GP: Ducati's Bagnaia wins in Spielberg, reclaims championship lead
Francesco Bagnaia of the Ducati Lenovo Team claimed his 25th premier class victory at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, held at the Red Bull Ring. Not only did he secure victory in the Sprint, but he also completely dominated the main race. Bagnaia secured the win after a fantastic performance, crossing the finish line ahead of Jorge Martin from Prima Pramac Racing, who had shown solid pace in the early stages of the race.
Enea Bastianini, also from Ducati Lenovo Team, finished third, maintaining his momentum in the Championship standings. Marc Marquez of Gresini Racing MotoGP came in fourth. He overcame an early setback when he dropped to 14th due to contact with Franco Morbidelli at Turn 1.
At the start of the race, Martin took the lead at Turn 1, but Bagnaia quickly regained the top spot on Lap 2. The two riders exchanged positions briefly, with Bagnaia eventually holding onto the lead. Meanwhile, Marquez started to recover positions, breaking into the top 10 by Lap 4 and eventually finishing fourth after a series of overtakes.
Brad Binder from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing finished fifth, starting from 12th on the grid. Behind him, Marco Bezzecchi of Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team secured sixth place, while Maverick Viñales from Aprilia Racing took seventh. Franco Morbidelli and Aleix Espargaro completed the top 10, with Alex Marquez from Gresini Racing MotoGP rounding out the group.
Pol Espargaro and Pedro Acosta finished 11th and 13th, respectively, while Takaaki Nakagami from IDEMITSU Honda LCR took 14th place. Raul Fernandez and Luca Marini retired from the race. Meanwhile, the next race at the Gran Premio GoPro de Aragon will take place in two weeks.
