Auto Expo 2012: GM unveils Chevrolet Sail hatchback and Chevrolet MPV
General Motors India showcased its first two products from its joint venture with SAIC. The first is a premium hatchback called the Chevrolet Sail and the second is an MPV concept. The Sail hatchback will go on sale later this year and GM say that they have built this car for the emerging markets. Extensive research was carried out for over a year at GM's Technical Centre in Bangalore to build a platform which will cater to the demands on the Indian roads and its customers.
The front view features Chevrolet's signature dual-port grille. The hood has very distinct cut-lines which give it a very masculine look. The unique waistline gives the hatchback a dynamic stance. The body is designed such that the hatchback has a long front and a short rear and also slopes upwards to give it a higher stance in the rear.
The fuel tank is placed in the middle of the car and combined with the short front and rear overhangs, have helped Chevrolet maximise interior space. The high roof also gives more headroom. This hatchback will have GM India's Smartech engines in both petrol and diesel options.
The MPV concept is engineered for the B segment and is specifically developed for the emerging markets keeping in mind the need to accommodate bigger families and so has flexi-seating and a choice of seven or eight seats. The chassis has been designed with the help of Lotus.
During the unveiling, Lowell Paddock, president and managing director of General Motors India said, "The introduction of the Sail hatchback and MPV concept demonstrates our commitment to take advantage of the global resources of GM and our partners in India. The two products have been tailored for local market conditions and the need of local customers for economical, user-friendly personal transportation.
