BMW is putting its ActiveHybrid 3 model into series production at its Munich plant. The new car, as its name suggests, uses a combination of a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline six petrol engine and an electric motor made up of lithium-ion cells. Peak power is rated at 340PS, which is 40PS more than in the 335i. An 8-speed hybrid auto transmission allows the ActiveHybrid 3 to zoom from 0-100kmph in just 5.3s, which is a 0.2 second improvement over the 335i.

BMW claims that the car can travel at a top speed of 75kmph only on electric power up to a range of 4km. On a combined driving cycle, the Hybrid 3 will deliver approximately 17kmpl. The M Sport package will be made available in this car at a later stage.
