BMW to recall more than 1.93 lakh vehicles in China
BMW will be recalling over 1.93 lakh vehicles in China owing to defective airbags. An official statement in this regard was issued by China's quality watchdog in Beijing. The list of affected vehicles also include around 1,68,861 cars which were manufactured between December 09, 2005 and December 23, 2011. Also, another 24,750 sedans manufactured between July 12, 2005 and December 31,2011 are being recalled.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has said that the recalls will be initiated from August 01, 2017. On the affected vehicles, when the driver and front passenger airbags inflate, the gas generators inside them can get damaged causing debris to fly. This can result in a safety hazard for passengers. BMW has said that the faulty airbags will be replaced without any charge to the owners.
This is not the first time that BMW is recalling cars over faulty airbags. In July 2014, BMW recalled 16 lakh cars globally as a preventive measure to replace the infamous defective Takata airbags. It was found that the defective part in the airbags ends up inflating them with too much pressure. This, in turn, can rupture the inflator's metal case and send debris flying across the cabin. This could turn out to be fatal for the vehicle occupants.
Around two weeks earlier, we drove the seventh-generation BMW 5 series which is expected to arrive on our shores sometime in mid-2017. Initially, BMW will offer the 530d and the 530i engines while the 520d and the M5 are likely to arrive later.
