BYD India trademarks 'Seagull' and 'Sea Lion' names
BYD India has registered two new nameplates, implying that the EV manufacturer may launch new models in the country. The applications for the names 'Seagull' and 'Sea Lion' have been submitted. The former is a little hatchback, while the latter is an electric SUV that has been sighted testing on foreign soil.
BYD Seagull
The BYD Seagull is 3,780 mm long, 1,715 mm wide, 1,540 mm height, and has a 2,500 mm wheelbase. This brings it squarely in line with the dimensions of India's best-selling electric vehicle, the Tata Tiago EV.
In terms of design, this EV hatchback will be unusual, with several strong body lines. It will almost certainly have LED projector headlights and tiny slatted DRLs. The side profile, front doors, and flap door handles will be standard, while the rear doors will have a distinctive design with a tapered window line.
The Seagull is already available for purchase in international markets. The electric hatchback is propelled by a front-mounted electric motor, which is powered by 30kWh and 38kWh battery packs. Only the former is expected to come to India. Once introduced in India, it would compete with vehicles like the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3.
Inside, the BYD Seagull is a technological marvel, with a 5-inch instrument console and a 12.8-inch primary infotainment screen. A flat-bottom steering wheel with audio controls, a smart layered dashboard, a powered driver's seat, a neatly integrated wireless charging pad, and other features are included.
BYD Sea Lion
The other BYD model dubbed the Sea Lion, has also been spotted testing abroad. The spotted test mule is said to be a midsize SUV. The spy pictures show the Sea Lion SUV with a coupe-like sloping roofline. It will be developed on BYD's e-platform 3.0.
The Sea Lion, like all BYD models, is slated to include a spinning 15.6-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster on the inside. Spy pictures of the Sea Lion SUV also reveal a flat-bottom steering wheel and a tiny drive selector similar to the one seen on the future BYD Seal sedan.
The Sea Lion's powertrain specifications have yet to be verified, however, it is expected to be offered in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. The rear-wheel drive option is believed to have the same specifications as the Atto 3, with an electric motor producing 204PS and 310 Nm of torque.
The all-wheel drive variant, on the other hand, is expected to have a dual-motor setup with a total output of 530PS. The crossover is expected to have an 82.5kWh battery pack with a range of up to 700 kilometres on a single charge.
BYD India
BYD displayed the Seal electric vehicle at the 2023 Auto Expo. The EV is already available in several foreign markets, with battery packs ranging from 61.4 to 82.5kWh. BYD presently sells two electric vehicles in India: the e6 and the Atto 3.
