BYD Seagull EV unveiled at Auto Shanghai 2023

BYD (Build Your Dreams) has revealed the new Seagull electric vehicle (EV) at the ongoing Auto Shanghai 2023 motor show in China. It is the smallest EV from the carmaker and sits below the all-electric Dolphin in its line-up. Notably, the Seagull EV comes with prices starting at 78,000 Chinese Yuan (about Rs 9.28 lakh).

BYD Seagull EV: Design and Dimensions
In terms of dimensions, the Seagull EV measures 3,780mm in length, 1,540 in height, and 1,715mm in width. It bears a classy and modern design language. The exterior highlights include angular headlights with integrated daytime running lights, various cuts and creases, an aggressive front bumper, swept-up belt lines, a roof-mounted spoiler, an LED lights bar running across the width, and subtle body cladding.

BYD Seagull EV: Interior
The interior of the all-electric Seagull is familiar as it bears a resemblance with the on-sale BYD Atto 3. It gets a small fully digital instrument cluster and a sizable touchscreen infotainment system. The latter can be rotated to either portrait or landscape mode like the Atto 3's infotainment. Further, the EV comes with a wireless charging pad, multifunctional flat-bottomed steering wheel, and an array of physical controls on the dashboard.

BYD Seagull EV: Powertrain
BYD has yet to disclose the powertrain details. However, it is believed that the Seagull will be available in a choice of two battery packs: 30kWh and 38kWh, with a range of 305km and 405km, respectively. Both will be paired with a single electric motor that is claimed to produce 74PS, while the power output of the extended-range version is rated at 100PS. The on-sale Tiago EV and Citroen eC3 offer a driving range of 315km and 320km, respectively.

BYD Seagull EV: Rivals
If BYD launched the Seagull in India, it would compete against the Tata Tiago EV, Citroen eC3, and upcoming MG Comet. With such a promising driving range and features, the Seagull EV appears to be one of the most compelling electric vehicles (EVs) for the Indian market. Even if its 405km claimed range turns out to be lesser in real-world driving conditions, it could still be a dealbreaker.
