BYD has officially introduced its first pickup truck, the BYD Shark, and Mexico is the first market to receive it. The 2024 Shark is a midsize truck with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that can travel over 800 kilometres.

BYD Shark: Design

The BYD Shark's dimensions are 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. That makes it bigger than a Ford Ranger but still smaller than full-size Ford F-150. The model is based on the DMO platform, a BYD-developed PHEV architecture particularly built for off-road vehicles.

The Shark features several strong design elements, including a rugged-looking front bumper and grille. There are several echos with the Ford F-150 Lightning, including squared headlights and taillights, as well as a light bar running across the front of the vehicle.

Around the back, the BYD Shark appears quite normal, with vertical taillights, much like many pickup trucks out there. The truck's tail lamps also have a full end-to-end connected lighting arrangement. The BYD Shark is equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels.

BYD Shark: Powertrain

The Shark pickup truck is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that includes a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors, one on each axle. Together, the truck puts out 435PS which is good enough to rocket this pickup from 0 to 100kmph in just 5.7 seconds.

A BYD LFP Blade battery pack with a capacity of 29.58 kWh stores enough energy for an electric range of up to 100 kilometres. The battery pack can be recharged from 30 to 80 percent in 20 minutes, according to claims. Vehicle-to-load technology enables the Shark's battery to power external electrical gadgets while camping.

The body-on-frame truck can tow 2,500 kg and has a payload capacity of 835 kg which is slightly lower than the cars it will compete against. It features independent front and rear suspension. BYD claims the torque mix between the front and back wheels can be adjusted, and there are three 'terrain' modes available for off-road use: snow, mud, and sand.

BYD Shark: Interior

The main attraction is a 12.8-inch rotative screen. The screen may be utilized in portrait or landscape mode, and it supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A secondary 10.25-inch screen for the driver displays critical information about the vehicle, while the 12-inch head-up display shows the driver's speed and instructions. In select markets, the infotainment screen features a karaoke function that works with an external microphone. There is a suite of cameras, including a 360-degree surround view and a 180-degree view under the car, as well as a 50-watt wireless phone charger.
