Did you know that no two Formula 1 car seats are the same? The seats are tailored to suit the dimensions of the driver which in turn allows him to relax and hence stay alert to drive fast. If you're thinking that I am contradicting myself by stating the words relaxed and alert in the same sentence, I'm not. Imagine driving at over 300kmph and while sitting in an awkward and uncomfortable position. It could be dangerous if you are unable to pay complete attention, right?
Quite like a Formula 1 racecar, the cars that we drive everyday come with a range of adjustments to suit individuals of varying heights and body sizes. Adjusting the seat, headrest, mirrors and steering wheel ensures that you are comfortable, which in turn allows you to focus on the road and drive better.
Adjusting your driving position before you set off also reduces the effects of fatigue that crop up after long hours behind the wheel. But the most important advantage of getting your seating right is car control. Many research studies have revealed that accidents could have been avoided if the driver was in proper control of the car.
The seating position, distance from the pedals, whether or not the knees are bent and the way the steering wheel is held are critical factors that enable the driver to react to emergency situations that usually arise in a split second. In this first edition of Better Driving, we focus on a few simple but effective steps that are usually ignored. It may seem time consuming in the beginning, especially if you are in a hurry, but adjusting your driving position takes no more than thirty seconds! Once you carry out these steps on a daily basis, it will seem like second nature after a few days. The end result will be an improved driving experience.
