Royal Enfield CrossRoader Jacket Review

On the sidelines of the Guerrilla 450 launch, Royal Enfield introduced the CrossRoader jacket, designed to complement the Himalayan-based roadster with its sport-touring form factor. Unlike the bold colours of the Guerrilla, the CrossRoader opts for more subdued optionsâ€"white-black or all-blackâ€"the latter being particularly well-suited for enduring India's varied weather conditions.

Design and Build Quality

The CrossRoader jacket is constructed with a chassis of 600D Cordura, known for its durability, particularly in common impact areas. The quality is commendable for the asking price, and while its design bears a resemblance to certain Dainese formats, it's important to note that this isn't one of Royal Enfield's tempting collaborations. Moderately sized mesh panels around the chest and vertical zippers on the sleeves reveal additional mesh sections for enhanced cooling, aided by exhaust ports on both shoulder blades. Two waterproof pockets on the waist add to the touring aesthetic, providing ample space for your phone, keys, and other essentials that need protection from the elements.

Protection

The CrossRoader strikes a balance between the weight of a typical touring jacket and the lightness of a breezy mesh jacket like the Royal Enfield Streetwind. It's equipped with Knox protectors, offering Level 2 protection (claimed) in the elbows, shoulders, and back, while the chest protectors are Level 1. However, the two trapezoidal chest protectors are notably heavy and bulky, and they impede airflow from the mesh panels. Upgrading to breathable D3O armour across the board would be a wise move, as it's not only lighter but also enhances breathability.

Comfort and Fit

As with many Royal Enfield jackets, the CrossRoader can be inconsistent in its fit. I would recommend that you try it on before you purchase. I needed an XL, which resulted in a slightly loose fit around the waist, causing the jacket to ride up. The zipper, too, can be tricky; you often end up forcing the corner seam into the runner, requiring you to look down to align it properly. On the plus side, there are plenty of fastenersâ€"on the sleeves, waist, and torsoâ€"making it a versatile, unisex jacket that can be adjusted to fit your body shape.

Practicality

The CrossRoader is a lightweight jacket, featuring two functional front pockets and a large rear pocket capable of storing the bundled (and compact) rain liner. This practicality makes it a versatile choice for roadsters, standard motorcycles, and adventure bikes, appealing to riders seeking a light, touring fit.

Value

Priced at Rs 14,995, the CrossRoader offers solid value, standing out from other homegrown brands with its titanium protectors on the shouldersâ€"a first from an Indian brand, according to Royal Enfield. The subtle Royal Enfield branding also ensures that riders of other motorcycle brands can consider the CrossRoader without feeling out of place.

Verdict

The Royal Enfield CrossRoader jacket is a well-rounded option for sport-touring enthusiasts. While it has some areas that could be improved, such as the fit and the bulkiness of the chest protectors, its durability, practical features, and competitive pricing make it a strong contender in the mid-range touring jacket segment. Whether you're on a roadster, standard bike, or adventure motorcycle, the CrossRoader has the versatility to be a reliable companion on your journeys.
