World Environment Day: 5 easy tips for eco-friendly driving
World Environment Day, celebrated every year on 5 June, is a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect our planet from ever-growing pollution. One significant area where we can make a positive impact is while using our car or even a two-wheeler. By adopting eco-friendly practices, everybody can contribute their share to reduce our carbon footprint for a healthier environment. Here are some easy tips to protect the environment while driving.
1. Maintain your vehicle regularly
The most crucial way to not only protect the environment but also your vehicle is timely servicing. Whether you have a car or a two-wheeler, proper maintenance ensures that your vehicle runs efficiently. To be specific, regular engine oil changes, air filter or spark plug replacements, brakes cleaning or changing worn out pads at designated intervals, and engine tune-ups can improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Additionally, keeping your tyres properly inflated can also enhance mileage.
2. Opt for fuel-efficient or strong-hybrid vehicles
If you are planning to buy a new car but do not want an electric vehicle (EV) yet, you can pick either a fuel economical car or a strong-hybrid, which does not need to charge like an EV. Choosing a fuel-efficient or strong-hybrid vehicle is one of the most impactful decisions you can make. Cars with better mileage emit fewer greenhouse gases or even consider hybrid vehicles, which offer significant reductions in emissions.
Currently, there are only three strong-hybrid models in the market around the Rs 20 lakh price bracket, namely the Honda City e:HEV, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. If you want a more premium or luxury car, there is Toyota Innova Hycross, Toyota Camry, and Lexus RX 500h, NX 350h, and ES 350h. For EV buyers, there are plenty of options, starting from the MG Comet EV to the ultra-luxurious Rolls Royce Spectre.
3. Drive and ride smoothly & responsibly
Aggressive driving, such as hasty acceleration and braking, can lead to an increase in fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions. By adopting a smooth driving style, exercising gentle pressure on the accelerator and brake pedals, you not only conserve fuel but also minimise vehicle wear and tear, enhancing the likelihood of reduced emissions. Not to mention, maintaining a steady speed and using cruise control on highways can also help achieve better fuel efficiency.
Idling wastes fuel and increases emissions. If you expect a long wait, such as at a signal, drive-thru, railroad crossing or even while waiting to pick someone up, it is better to turn off your engine. Most modern vehicles come with an auto idle start/stop system.
4. Use a portable dust bin
Rather than disposing of your fuel bills and other waste in the door pockets or armrest storage, consider utilising a car dustbin. Not only will it maintain the cleanliness of your car, but it will also contribute to the reduction of waste discarded in public areas or on the road.
5. Plan your trips & lighten your load
Combining errands into a single trip or avoiding to leave home at peak traffic hours can reduce the total distance you drive and minimise the time your car is running. Even if you have known routes in your city, use maps to find the most efficient routes and avoid traffic congestion. Planning your commutes can also help you avoid peak traffic times, further improving fuel efficiency.
Furthermore, the inclusion of excessive weight in your vehicle can have a negative impact on its fuel efficiency. Remove unnecessary items from your car, especially heavy ones. Avoid installing roof racks and cargo boxes as they can affect aerodynamics and increase fuel consumption.
All in all, you can also try to use public transportation, bicycle, or walk to your destination at least once a week. These alternatives not only help the environment but also save you money on fuel and parking. Another benefit of walking or cycling to run errands is keeping yourself healthy and proactive. If we commit to minor changes in our driving and riding habits, everyone can collectively make a significant impact on the environment.
