Honda and Sony to jointly develop and sell EVs by 2025
Japanese brands Honda and Sony have announced that they plan to jointly develop and manufacture electric vehicles and their accompanying technologies. The two firms intend to start a new joint venture company that will begin its first EV sales by 2025.
Honda-Sony EV joint venture mutually beneficial
The new Hinda and Sony joint venture will be established by this year and aims to capitalize on each firm's strengths. The new venture will benefit from Honda's long experience in vehicle development, manufacturing processes and technologies and after-sales service management experience. Sony, meanwhile, will offer its expertise in imaging, sensing, telecommunication, network, and entertainment technologies to create a full suite of mobility services and technologies.
Honda-Sony EV joint venture responsibilities
The new joint venture firm will be a design, development and sales company. The electric vehicles developed by this firm will be manufactured by Honda at its facilities as the joint venture company will not own any manufacturing plants. Sony will supply a full mobility services platform for these EVs.
Honda-Sony upcoming EVs
This joint venture should mean that the Vision S EV sedan prototype Sony showcased at CES will finally see production in some form. The unnamed SUV prototype also showcased may also be in the pipeline.
