Honda Prelude set to be revived at the Goodwood Festival of Speed
Honda has formally announced that it will be bringing the cherished Prelude back into production. This week's Goodwood Festival of Speed will mark the introduction of the two-door coupe concept to the European market. The concept car was surprisingly showcased last year at the Tokyo Mobility Show and was believed to be an EV. It's now safe to say, that the Honda Prelude will be a hybrid.
The carmaker claims that the Prelude will return on the Civic platform as a two-door coupe. Although Honda hasn't released many details about the vehicle thus far, it is anticipated that it would use the e:HEV hybrid powertrain from the European Civic for that market. That means a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with about 200PS on tap.
The car will go into production with both left-hand drive and right-hand drive said to be available (based on market).
For five generations until 2001, the original Preludeâ"which made its European premiere forty-five years agoâ"served as an exhilarating, high-performance display of Honda's cutting-edge technology. The new model, which offers a hybrid drivetrain and a captivating mix of refinement and design, seems to be a worthy comeback for the well-known tag.
The Prelude concept has a sporty appeal with a low-slung stance. It features a pointed and partly closed-off front end, symmetrical and flowing lines, a slanted roofline, flush door handles, door-mounted outside door mirrors, a split headlight setup, black alloy wheels paired with blue Brembo brakes, and a small boot-lip spoiler. Overall, the Prelude appears to be a production-spec model rather than a concept vehicle.
Tomoyuki Yamagami, Chief Engineer and Large Project Leader, Honda Motor, said: "The new Prelude not only marks the latest chapter in our ever evolving hybrid story, it is also the product of 25 years of pioneering hybrid research and development. Ensuring this model maintains its 'sporty' DNA by perfectly blending the efficiency and environmental advantages of electrified driving with an exhilarating experience behind the wheel â" liberating users from their daily lives with increased driving pleasure."
