Hybrid vehicles to benefit from road tax waiver in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, one of the Union Territory administrations in India, has recently announced a road tax exemption for hybrid vehicles as part of its efforts to promote electric mobility. According to a notification issued by the administration, the road tax will be waived for all battery electric vehicles, including hybrid vehicles, for the next five years. This move comes after the administration had previously offered a road tax waiver for electric vehicles in 2020. The exemption for hybrid vehicles will be in effect from 18 March 2023 to 17 March 2028.

The popular mass market hybrid vehicles sold in India are the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda City e:HEV hybrid. There is also the new Toyota Innova Hycross, upcoming Maruti Suzuki Invicto, and Toyota Camry, among others. Lexus also has a a range of strong hybrid sedans and SUVs in its India line-up.

The prices of hybrid vehicles in Chandigarh range from Rs 18 lakh to Rs 1 crore, with a road tax on Rs 18 lakh vehicle amounting to approximately Rs 78,000, according to Nitin Mehan, Secretary of the Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association (FADA) in Chandigarh.

The UT administration of Chandigarh aims to transform the city into a "Model EV City" and has introduced the Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2022 towards this goal. The policy, announced in September 2022, aims to achieve zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) in all Indian cities within five years.

The policy offers incentives for up to 42,000 vehicles across different categories. These incentives range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 1 lakh and are available for the purchase of 32,000 e-cycles, 3,000 electric cars, and 10,000 electric two-wheelers between 20 September 2022 and 19 September 2027. The UT administration aims for EVs to account for 70% of new vehicle registrations by the end of the policy period. Meanwhile, between 2017 and 2022, Chandigarh UT registered a total of 3,000 electric vehicles (EVs), which included 420 electric cars, 2,036 hybrid vehicles, and 1,233 electric bikes.
