Hyundai Kona EV delisted from brand's official India site
Hyundai Motor India Pvt Ltd's website no longer lists the Kona EV, indicating its discontinuation from the market. Launched in 2019, it struggled to gain traction against its rivals and was one of the lowest selling cars from the South Korean automaker in the country.
The electric SUV was available in a single variant, called Premium, at Rs 23.84 lakh (ex-showroom). It came with a 39.2kWh battery pack paired with a single electric motor that generated 136PS and 395Nm of torque. With this, the SUV offered a claimed range of 452km on a full charge. The Kona electric competed against the likes of the MG ZS EV and Tata Nexon EV.
The Kona EV facelift was unveiled in 2020, followed by the Kona N, but they never made to India. Similary, Hyundai showcased the second-gen Kona EV in late 2022 with a completely fresh design inside and out. However, the Indian market did not get the new model as well. Despite big discounts, the electric SUV faced challenges in India and lagged behind its competitors in sales.
It appears highly unlikely that Hyundai will bring back the Kona EV to India. It will likely to replace the electric SUV with a completely new model, such as the upcoming Creta EV, instead. Based on the current Creta, the soon-to-be unveiled EV version of it will fall into a price bracket similar to the Kona electric. Not only that, it will also carry a higher premium over the ICE counterpart. Reports suggest that the upcoming Creta EV will go into production as early as the end of this year ahead of its market debut at the beginning of 2025. Upon launch, it will take on the MG ZS EV.
