"India will not tailor policies for Tesla" says Piyush Goyal
According to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, India will not change its regulations to accommodate Tesla, the US electric vehicle (EV) maker. He stated that the country's legislation and pricing rules will entice all-electric car manufacturers worldwide to create a foothold in India's fast-rising economy.
Piyush Goyal stated that increased usage of battery-powered vehicles will cut carbon emissions, and the government acknowledges the need for a strong EV ecosystem. This environment will help reduce the costly oil import expenditures and save foreign cash.
Tesla had requested an initial tariff reduction to offset a 70 percent customs charge for vehicles under 40,000 US dollars and 100 percent for models over that amount.
Goyal highlighted that, while Tesla had requested concessions as a condition for developing a facility in India, the government does not create policy based on specific corporate interests.
"We are working on several initiatives where we are having inter-ministerial (consultations) and a dialogue with the stakeholders, with potential investors from across the world from Europe, from the United States, from the Far East, from Japan, from Korea. So we have significant engagements going on across the world," Goyal said in an interview with news agency PTI.
While acknowledging that India needs to have a strong electric mobility ecosystem to combat the climate change challenge and reduce pollution levels, Piyush Goyal stated that electric mobility will boost our economic production. He stated that several advantages will follow, including foreign exchange savings, reduced trade deficits, and decreased inflation, which will assist lower interest rates.
