Is the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 the best Maybach money can buy?
The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series is by far the most unlikely Maybach that anyone would've ever predicted, but yes it is a reality. Taking a standard SL and giving it the Maybach treatment makes this one of the coolest and sportiest cars in the brand's history.
The SL 680 is equipped with an illuminated Maybach grille with slender vertical slats. Over the SL Roadster, the front bumper is revised and heavily chrome-plated. The black bonnet has a chromed fin running down the middle and an upright Mercedes-Benz star. Graphite grey with the Maybach pattern integrated, the bonnet is available "upon request." The headlamp highlights in rose gold, the gold-finished windshield frames, and the option of 21-inch wheels with either the classic five-hole Monoblock or multi-spoke designs are among the finer touches.
The market launch will include two carefully chosen design concepts: "White Ambience" and "Red Ambience." The Red Ambience has a two-tone paint job with MANUFAKTUR garnet red metallic on top of obsidian black metallic. On the other hand, the White Ambience blends MANUFAKTUR opalite white magno with obsidian black metallic.
Around the back, there's a new diffuser design and a rear skirt exclusive to the brand, complete with extra chrome trim. The back bench has been removed thanks to an "aerodynamically designed" double scoop.
It has the same interior architecture as a standard SL, but much more of the inside is covered in Crystal White Nappa leather outside of the seats. The premium material is used on the door panels, centre console, and even the area behind the seats. Additional features include a customized steering wheel, stainless steel pedals, and door sills.
The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that powers the Maybach SL 680 produces 800Nm of torque and 585hp. Mercedes' 4Matic+ all-wheel drive technology distributes power to all four wheels using a 9-speed automatic gearbox that is linked to the engine. The Maybach SL 680 takes just 4.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph.
