Mahindra Thar 2WD Vs 4WD: What's different

The Mahindra Thar has been around for a few years and now Mahindra has widened the Mahindra Thar line-up by launching the off-roader with a 2WD powertrain. Let's take a look at what are the differences between the 2WD and 4WD variants of the Thar.

Mahindra Thar 2WD Vs 4WD: Powertrain

The Mahindra Thar 2WD gets a new 1.5-litre CRDe diesel engine to help it duck under the sub-four-metre tax barrier. This motor puts out 117PS and 300 NM and can be paired with a six-speed manual only. The petrol motor continues to be the 2.0-litre mStallion unit with 150PS and 320 Nm. This can be had with a six-speed automatic.

The 130PS 2.2-litre engine and optional mechanically-locking rear differential for off-road driving are more potent and bigger in the 4x4 Thar diesel.

The entry-level Thar continues to be offered in both the AX optional and LX variants. So the features list remains unchanged with highlights being the 7-inch touchscreen with adventure graphics, a useful colour MID. connected tech, keyless entry and powered mirrors. A push-button start and climate control AC are still stark misses as is telescopic steering adjustment.

You still get all-terrain tyres, an electronic brake locking differential, ESP with roll-over mitigation, hill hold and hill descent control. There are two new colour options - Blazing Bronze and Everest White. The Thar has a 4-star GNCAP safety rating and features two airbags, ESC and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

The 4x4 version now gets an electronic brake locking differential from Bosch that reacts more aggressively when needed. The mechanical locking differential continues as an option on the LX diesel versions. There are new accessory packs as well which add exterior styling elements as well as interior enhancements like front and rear armrests with storage.

Mahindra Thar 2WD Vs 4WD: Prices

The Mahindra Thar 2WD range starts from Rs 9.99 lakh and goes up to Rs 13.49 lakh. The Thar 4WD starts from Rs 13.59 lakh and rises to Rs 16.29 lakh.
