Mercedes-Benz evaluating more EV launches for India
Speaking to a news outlet, Santosh Iyer, sales head at Mercedes-Benz India has confirmed that the German carmaker will evaluate the viability of launching more EVs in the country. The company has 22 models planned as per its global EV roadmap and some of these can be expected to make their way here.
The company was the first to launch a luxury EV in India with the Mercedes-Benz EQC and was also the first to begin local production of performance models with the facelifted Mercedes-AMG GLC 43. The company has continued this trend which more localised AMG models with the Mercedes-AMG A 35 and the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35. This year, the company has focused on shoring up its offerings in the entry-luxury segment with the launch of the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine as well as the Mercedes-Benz GLA.
Mercedes-Benz has also become more competitive in the highest end of the market, by launching the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 as well as the new-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class. As for more Mercedes-Benz EVs. The company is now considering its electric flagship, the Mercedes-Benz EQS for an Indian launch. No other details of upcoming models have been revealed but the new C-Class, the upcoming new GLC and the AMG versions of the facelifted E-Class and the GLS seem possibilities for the Indian market. The Maybach version of the new S-Class is another strong contender.
This strategy of feeding the Indian market with a steady stream of models is not new for Mercedes-Benz, electric or otherwise. The company says this is the best way to grow the relatively small luxury car market in India, restricted by its high taxation structure. To this end, Mercedes also recently completely revamped its sales model in the country.
