Mercedes-Benz India opened pre-bookings for the new G 580 with EQ Technology in 2024 and has now officially launched the electric SUV at Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom). The new G 580 is an electric G wagon and enters India alongside the 5-seater version of the EQS SUV. The German brand also confirmed that a total of 8 new vehicles will be launched in 2025 in India. The car will be on display at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 next week.

The electricity-powered G 580 with EQ Technology features a 116kWh battery pack that provides up to 473km of range (WLTP). Known for its extreme 0ff-road nature, the electric G has four electric motors, 1 for each wheel. Combined, they produce a total of 587PS and 1,164Nm of torque. That's good enough to take this box on wheels from 0 to 100kmph in less than 5 seconds.

The G 580 can be charged in 32 minutes using a fast charger. Mercedes says the drag coefficient has decreased to 0.44 and top speed is restricted to 180 kph.

The chassis design, which is typical of the G-Class, is very off-road competent, with independent suspension on the front axle and a stiff axle at the back, which was created specifically for integrating the electric motor. The vehicle will have unique on- and off-road driving qualities thanks to each wheel having an electric motor.

The front appearance of the car is unmistakably familiar, thanks to that decades-old boxy stance and circular headlight design. The front grille is closed off and features the same 3D star design as the EQS, as well as an LED strip around it. The spare wheel in the back has been replaced with a storage box. The SUV's roof rack also has a light bar, emphasizing its off-road capabilities. The SUV has a sidestep, strong door handles, aerodynamic air curtains, and 18-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels that are gloss black.

On the inside, it's very similar to the regular G that we're well fond of. The two 12.3-inch panels of the Mercedes MBUX infotainment system - a touchscreen infotainment screen and a driver's display - have been retained. Below the touchscreen are physical controls for the air conditioning, heating, and ventilation. Additionally, Mercedes has included a steering-wheel button with adaptive cruise control.
