Mercedes-Benz GLS facelift launched: Old vs new
Mercedes-Benz India launched the refreshed 2024 GLS facelift in India yesterday, on 8 January. The prices of this SUV start from Rs 1.32 crore (ex-showroom). This mid-cycle update has brought numerous changes to the GLS in design, interior, colour, and powertrains, which now feature mild-hybrid functionality across the board. The India-spec model is available in two trims, namely GLS 450 4Matic and GLS 450d 4Matic. That being said, here we bring you a detailed comparison between the old and new GLS.
Mercedes-Benz GLS: Design and Interior
The GLS facelift features a new grille with four horizontal slats instead of two on the previous model, updated headlights and taillights, a new front bumper with an air inlet, reworked body cladding, and a new set of 21-inch alloy wheels compared to the old model. Moreover, the India-spec GLS facelift is available in a choice of five colour options: Sodalite Blue, Obsidian Black, Selenite Grey, Polar White, and High-tech Silver.
On the inside, the refreshed GLS features a new steering wheel, new interior trims and upholstery, updated MBUX screens, and air-con vent louvres finished in galvanised silver shadow, which takes inspiration from Maybach GLS. Compered to its predecessor, the latest iteration of the MBUX brings three distinct graphics: Classic, Sporty, and Discreet along with three modes: Assistance, Navigation. and Service. Mercedes-Benz India offers three interior themes: black, beige, and brown.
Mercedes-Benz GLS: Features
In terms of features, the GLS facelift benefits from a parking package as standard, featuring a 360deg camera setup along with a new transparent bonnet function. This off-road-oriented feature was first seen on the new-gen GLC and the GLA facelift too. Additionally, there is a new off-road mode, which shows the steering angle, lateral inclination, and compass on the central screen.
Being the top-of-the-line SUV in the Mercedes-Benz line-up, the GLS facelift boasts all the bells and whistles, such as a four-zone temperature control, a wireless charging pad, connected car technology, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, a Burmester 3D surround sound system, a powered tailgate, and power front seats with ventilation and heating functions, 11.6-inch rear-seat entertainment screens, multiple airbags, ESC, and TPMS, among others.
Mercedes-Benz GLS: Powertrains
What is similar to the previous GLS is the engine options, although they have been updated. The GLS 400 4Matic gets a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine 381PS and 500Nm of torque and 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, turbocharged diesel unit that makes 367PS and 700Nm of torque. Both motors now come with a 48V mild-hybrid assistance and an integrated starter generator (ISG), offering a brief additional power boost. Meanwhile, there is a nine-speed automatic transmission paired with the both engines.
