New-gen Hyundai Elantra launched at Rs 12.99 lakh in India
Hyundai India has launched the sixth-generation Elantra in India. The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is available in five trims â" S, SX, SX AT, SX(O) and SX(O) AT. Priced between Rs 12.99-19.19 lakh (ex-Delhi), the Elantra is based on a new platform and competes with the likes of the Chevrolet Cruze, Skoda Octavia and the Renault Fluence. The premium sedan comes with an option between 1.6-litre diesel and a new 2.0-litre petrol engine. These engines are mated to a 6-speed manual and an automatic transmission.
The all-new Hyundai Elantra gets a more refined design compared to the previous version. The most important change is the sharp hexagonal grille in the front that is reminiscent to the new-age Audis. Based on the Fluidic 2.0 design, the sixth-generation Elantra gets a bolder design than before. The fronts gets HID lamps with LED guide lights similar to the previous model but with a change in the design. Visually, the side profile of the new Elantra looks unchanged. However, Hyundai claims that the sedan gets best-in-class drag coefficient of 0.29. The rear gets split LED lights with a new boot design, making it look more stylish than before.
The new Elantra measures 4,570mm in length, 1,800mm in width and 1,465mm in height, making it 80mm longer and 25mm wider than the previous iteration. It gets a wheelbase of 2,700mm and has a ground clearance of 165mm. All the variants run on 205/60 R16 tyres as standard.
The cabin has been updated with more premium design along with plusher materials. The highlight of the cabin is the new 8.0 touchscreen infotainment system. In addition to offering audio-video and navigational options, it comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity options. The feature list also includes sunroof as well as smart tailgate system that automatically opens the trunk within three seconds of standing close to the rear of the car. The top-end variant also gets start-stop button, dual-zone climate control, cruise control and anti-pinch windows. In terms of safety, all the variants get driver and front passenger airbags as standard while the SX(O) AT gets side and curtain airbags too.
The powertrain options that are offered in the new-generation Hyundai Elantra include the four-cylinder 1.6-litre diesel engine that makes 128PS at 4,000rpm and generates 260Nm of torque at 1,900-2,750rpm. The 1.8-litre petrol of the last-generation model has been replaced with a brand-new Nu 2.0-litre motor. This motor puts out 152PS at 6,200 rpm and makes 192Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The new Hyundai Elantra competes with the Skoda Octavia (Rs 16.27-21.99 lakh), Chevrolet Cruze (Rs 14.65-18.31 lakh) and the Renault Fluence (Rs 14.72-16.31 lakh).
