New Yamaha YZF-R9 makes global debut
Yamaha Motor Corporation has introduced the latest addition to its acclaimed R-series, the 2025 YZF-R9, set to replace the iconic YZF-R1 in the manufacturer's supersport lineup. Positioned as a versatile yet powerful motorcycle, the R9 seeks to bridge the gap between track performance and everyday usability with a blend of advanced electronics, cutting-edge design, and the brand's well-established CP3 engine.
2025 Yamaha R9 Highlights
The new YZF-R9 incorporates Yamaha's familiar R-series design language, featuring an M-shaped front duct, angular LED lights, and integrated winglets for enhanced aerodynamics and stability. It uses a gravity-cast Deltabox frame, which is claimed to deliver supple and predictable feel at low speeds and rigidity for sharp handling at high speeds. Yamaha says that the R9 features almost 50/50 weight distribution. It weighs 195kg, which keeps the R9 between the old R6 and the R1 that weigh 185kg and 201kg, respectively.
2025 Yamaha R9 Engine specifications
Powering the R9 is Yamaha's CP3 engine - an 890cc three-cylinder liquid-cooled unit that is tweaked specifically for this model. With a refined ECU map and optimised gearing, the R9 intends to deliver a balance of performance and usability. This Euro 5 Plus engine produces peak power output of 119PS, which is the same as the Tracer 9, MT-09, and XSR900. While Yamaha has not given many details, we expect it to make about 93Nm of torque.
2025 Yamaha R9 Features & Specifications
The new YZF-R9 is fitted with new fully adjustable KYB front upside-down forks and a KYB rear monoshock. Then, there are Brembo Stylema monoblock front calipers and a Brembo radial master cylinder, paired with large 320mm dual front discs.
Furthermore, the R9 borrows some electronic rider aids from the flagship YZF-R1, such as a six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), a nine-mode traction control, three-mode slide control system, three-mode lift control system, and brake control system. Additionally, Yamaha offers a new five-inch colour TFT display, Y-Connect app support, dual-channel ABS, and launch control, among others.
