Ola to set up vehicle engineering and design centre in UK
Ola Electric, which recently raised USD 200 million in its latest round of funding, has now announced it will set up a new vehicle engineering and design centre in the UK. The facility is being called the Ola Futurefoundry and will be set up with a USD 100 million investment over the next five years.
The Ola Futurefoundry will be staffed with over 200 designers and automotive engineers who will work on two and four wheeler EV design, advanced high-performance automotive engineering, digital and physical modelling among other disciplines. This facility will also lead research and development into other forms of vehicle propulsion like FCEVs. It is expected that the Ola electric car that was recently shown in concept form will be developed here as well as more vehicle types in the future.
Wayne Burgess, vice president of vehicle design at Ola Electric said of this development, "We want to create a world-class design and R and D team with global sensibilities. Ola Futurefoundry is an important step in building a multi-disciplinary team that is agile, flexible, and responsive to the various needs of our consumers around the world. We are setting up in Coventry a global epicentre of automotive and technology talent. Futurefoundry will supplement and collaborate with our core team in Bangalore, India to deliver exciting new EVs across two-wheeler, four-wheeler and other form factors."
Ola currently operates out of its campus in Bangalore and manufactures the Ola scooter out of its manufacturing facility near the city, which it claims is the largest of its kind in the world. The new centre will work in close collaboration with these facilities and will also partner with other education and research institutions in the UK on technology research and development.
