Land Rover has marked its foray in yet another segment of SUVs by announcing the prices of the Range Rover Velar in India, which begin at Rs 78.83 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) for the base 2-litre petrol and diesel variants, respectively. There is also a 3-litre V6 diesel on offer which will cost Rs 1.37 crore (ex-showroom) for the top of the range First Edition. The Range Rover Velar, which shares its underpinnings with the Jaguar F-Pace SUV, but is 72mm longer at 4,803mm. Within the Land Rover portfolio, the Range Rover Velar sits between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport. The premium SUV will compete with the likes of the BMW X6 and the Porsche Macan. OVERDRIVE had reported that Land Rover would be bringing the Velar to India in the second half of 2017. You can read our driving impressions of the Range Rover Velar here. Bookings for the Velar are already on while deliveries will only begin at the end of January 2018.
The Velar has been launched with three engine options: The 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel Ingenium motor with 180PS/430Nm, the 3.0-litre V6 diesel which puts out 300PS/700Nm with a claimed 0-100kmph time of 6.7s. The petrol variants will be powered by 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor that puts out 250PS/365Nm. Sadly though, the most powerful version of the lot, 3.0-litre supercharged V6 with an impressive 380PS/450Nm and a claimed 0-100kmph time of 5.3s has not been brought to India. All the motors are mated to Land Rover's 8-speed automatic unit.
The Land Rover Range Rover Velar is manufactured at the company's flagship Solihull plant in West Midlands, UK. The same facility also manufactures the Jaguar F-Pace, Jaguar XE and the Range Rover Sport. The headlights look like a sleeker version of those on the Range Rover Sport, while the large grille reminds us of the Range Rover Vogue. It measures 4,803mm in length, 1,903mm in width and 1,665mm in height. The Velar has a wading depth of 650mm.
In terms of features, the Range Rover Velar gets the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. It features two 10-inch HD touchscreens, one on the dashboard and one just below it. The one on the top handles functions such as a navigation, media and phone menu. It is slightly curved and can be tilted through 30 degrees according to the driver's preference. The lower screen, meanwhile, handles functions like climate control and the terrain response system.
