Sixth-gen Chevrolet Camaro production ends
Chevrolet has officially said farewell to the sixth-generation Camaro, with production of the critically acclaimed coupe coming to an end. With no new Camaro generation on the horizon, the 1967 Genera Motors muscle car is being retired for the second time in the last 20 years.
In a statement issued to Road & Track the automaker emphasized its gratitude by saying "Camaro is a passion product. It has developed a fan base across the world and has brought people into Chevrolet dealerships for generations. The sixth generation specifically represented athleticism and composure â" exuding confidence on the road and dominance on the track."
The sixth-generation Camaro was unveiled in 2015, with full-scale manufacturing and deliveries commencing in 2016 to commemorate the model's 50th anniversary. The departing Camaro, which was built on the General Motors Alpha chassis, was hailed as a highly capable performance and driver's vehicle in its day.
The penultimate vehicle to leave the manufacturing line is a ZL1 1LE model with a 6.2-litre V8 engine and a six-speed manual transmission.
When the fourth-generation Camaro was discontinued in 2002, fans had to wait seven years for the pony car to return. For the time being, all we have is GM's assurance that the Camaro's show will continue, but no clue when.
The Camaro's major competitors, the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger, are also getting replacements. Ford has already begun selling a new Mustang generation, and Dodge appears to be going electric with the Challenger.
