South America bound Renault Kardian debuts at 2023 Japan Mobility Show
Following a series of teasers, Renault has finally debuted the new Kardian SUV. The subcompact, B-segment SUV will first be introduced in South America, followed by other international markets. It is the first Renault vehicle to be constructed on a new modular platform that can be used on everything from small SUVs to huge pickup trucks.
Renault Kardian: Design
The Kardian is 4,119mm in length, has a wheelbase of 2,604 mm and is built on the new CMF modular platform. Renault claims that up to eight vehicles based on this platform will be offered internationally, focusing on emerging countries.
The tiny urban B-segment car has the brand's new style identity, which includes a 'NouvelR' emblem and a new signature lighting pattern. The Kardian has split headlamps in the front and a flat hood. Plastic cladding on the side, 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a shark-fin antenna, and roof rails add to the SUV's appearance.
The taillamps gain a C-shaped design at the back, similar to the Renault Kiger that we have on offer in India. Higher-end models have beautiful alloy wheels, roof rails, a shark-fin antenna, and chrome accents.
Renault Kardian: Powertrain
Despite its rugged appearance and skid plates, the Kardian only sends power to the front wheels. That power is provided by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine mated to a dual-clutch gearbox and capable of producing 125 PS and 220 Nm of torque. It also comes mated to a 6-speed DCT transmission.
Renault Kardian: Interior and Features
Inside, it features a sophisticated dashboard design comparable to previous Renault SUVs, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, a driving mode selector, and a four-spoke steering wheel.
In terms of features, the Kardian obviously outperforms the Kiger. It has 13 Advanced Driver Aids Systems, 6 airbags, a Blind Spot Warning, a 360-degree parking camera, Adaptive Cruise Control, Frontal Collision Warning, Electronic Stability Control, active emergency braking systems, and a speed limiter.
It's highly unlikely for the Kardian to come to India as the Kiger already exists in this market and is doing relatively quite well. But this new platform is quite flexible and Renault will be producing a number of cars on it in India for domestic and international markets.
