Spec and Price Comparo: Tata Nexon EV vs MG ZS EV vs Hyundai Kona
Tata Motors' Nexon EV has just stepped into the market with a starting price of Rs 13.99 lakh. The price for the mid-trim Tata Nexon EV XZ is Rs 14.99 lakh and Tata Nexon EV XZ Lux costs Rs 15.99 lakh. All the aforementioned prices are introductory ex-showroom, pan-India prices.
However, if you're in the market for an all-electric SUV, you'd come across similar offerings though ranging in segments. Earlier this month, the MG ZS EV was launched with a starting price of Rs 20.88 lakh ex-showroom and was pitched against the Hyundai Kona that was launched in India last year. Following is our specification comparison of the three electric SUVs on sale in India.
Pricing
All the variants of the Tata Nexon EV undercut the MG ZS EV. The higher trim level of the MG ZS EV is closely matched with the pricing of the Hyundai Kona which retails at Rs 23.71 lakh ex-showroom India.
Out of the three, the MG ZS EV is only sold in five cities - Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. While the other two are on sale pan-India.
Power figures and drivetrain
The MG ZS EV has an upper hand with the power figure. The MG ZS EV makes 143PS, which is 13PS more than that of Hyundai Kona's 136PS power output. The Nexon EV here has the least power output rated at 129PS. But when it comes to torque, the Kona leads with 395Nm of torque followed by 353Nm of the ZS EV. The Nexon EV here gets the lowest torque rating at 245Nm.
The ZS EV gets a higher capacity battery of 44.5kWh whereas the Kona has a relatively smaller battery of 39.2kWh. The Nexon EV gets a 30.2kWh battery pack which offers a claimed range of 312km. The Kona has the highest claimed range of 435km while the ZS EV has a claimed range of 340km.
Charging time
With a 7kW charger, the ZS EV would need six to eight hours for a full charge while the Kona with the same charger would need six hours and 10 minutes. The Nexon EV would take eight hours for the same.
However, things turn around with a fast charger. With a 50kW (fast) charger, the ZS EV can be charged up to 80 per cent of the battery capacity in 50 minutes while the Kona will need 57 minutes for the same amount of charge. The Nexon EV just falls short by three minutes and gets up to 80 per cent charge in 60 minutes.
