Spec comparison: 2024 BMW 5 Series LWB vs Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB

BMW has introduced the new generation 5 Series long wheelbase (LWB) in India, making the sedan to be the third LWB model after the 7 Series and 3 Series. Not only that, India is the first right-hand drive and only second market after China to receive the LWB version. Here, this all-new 5 Series LWB directly rivals the E-Class LWB. However, Mercedes-Benz has not introduced the new-gen E-Claas LWB in the country yet, so we are going to compare it with the on-sale model for now.

2024 BMW 5 Series LWB vs Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Dimensions

The new 5 Series LWB is a longer by 90mm than the E-Class and has a 26mm more wheelbase. Additionally, it is also marginally wider and taller by 91mm and 23mm, respectively, than the Merc.

BMW 5 Series LWB is available only in the petrol engine, while the E-Class LWB can be had in both petrol and diesel units. Not to mention, there is also a high-performance E350d with a six-pot engine that delivers 286PS and 600Nm of torque. However, the 5 Series LWB 530Li M Sport makes considerably more power and torque compared to the E-Class LWB E200. As a result, it also has an upper hand in 0-100kmph time.

BMW has bestowed the 5 Series LWB with a host of features, such as BMW Curved Display comprising a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch central information hub, LED headlamps, illuminated grille, adaptive LED headlamps with anti-dazzling function, welcome carpet light, rear window heating, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, four-zone temperature control, powered front seats with lumbar support, rear seat USB Type-C sockets and tablet holder, panoramic sunroof, central console switches made glass, telematics, BMW Digital Key Plus (lock/unlock and engine switch on functions), 18-speaker, 655-watt, Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, 360deg camera, reversing assistant, fully remote parking via smartphone, drive recorder, wireless phone charging in the front and rear, attentiveness assistant, and comfort suspension with stroke-dependent damper technology, and more.

It also gets lane departure warning with active return, front collision warning with brake intervention, left-turn warning with braking function, lane change warning, rear crossing-traffic alert, rear collision prevention, and exit warning.

On the flip side, E-Class LWB is fitted with a dual 12.3-inch screen setup, a panoramic sunroof, LED headlamps and adaptive rear lights, electric sunblind, multicolour ambient lighting, Burmester sound system, powered rear reclining seats with memory function and comfort headrests, powered front seats with lumbar support, telematics, connected car tech, Alexa Home Integration, active brake assist, active parking assistant, 360deg camera, pre-safe, and power closing doors, among others.

The E-Class LWB is costlier by Rs 4 lakh than the 5 Series LWB. But BMW is offering the sedan at an introductory price, which will be for limited period. Not to mention, the first 500 owners of the 5 Series LWB will benefit from customised cushions.

2024 BMW 5 Series LWB vs Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Verdict

On the paper, the 2024 BMW 5 Series LWB looks compelling compared to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB. It has larger dimensions, extra rear legroom, more features, upmarket interior, and modern-day tech - all of that at Rs 72.90 lakh. Whereas, the E-Class LWB is more expensive and does not offer as many lucrative features and equipment as its rival. However, the 5 Series LWB should get ready for a tough competition as the all-new E-Class LWB is likely to arrive soon.
