Spec comparison: Tata Altroz Racer vs Hyundai i20 N Line vs Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Tata has introduced the new performance-oriented Altroz Racer in India at Rs 9.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It is available in three variants across three colour options. With this new version, the hatchback benefits from a host of new features debuted with the Nexon facelift. Not only that, the Racer also leverages the Nexon's petrol engine and manual gearbox. Given the major make over, how does the new Tata Altroz Racer stack up against its closest rivals, the Maruti Fronx and Hyundai i20 N Line? Let us find out.

To begin with, the Altroz Racer comes in three variants, namely R1, R2 and R3, across a choice of three colours: Atomic Orange, Pure Grey, and Avenue White. Whereas, the i20 N Line, offered in N6 and N8 variants, is available with Atlas White, Thunder Blue, Titan Grey, Abyss Black, and Starry Night as well as Thunder Blue with Abyss Black and Atlas White with Abyss Black.

Maruti Suzuki offers the Fronx in 10 shades: Nexa Blue, Arctic White, Splendid Silver, Grandeur Grey, Eathen Brown, Opulent Red, and Bluish Black along with Earthen Brown, Splendid Silver, and Opulent Red with Bluish Black roof. It comes in Sigma, Delta, Delta+. Delta+ (O), Alpha, and Zeta variants.

Powering the Altroz Racer is the Nexon-borrowed 1.2-litre, inline three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that makes 120PS and 170Nm of torque. This motor is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Hyundai has given Hyundai i20 N Line is a 1.0-litre, inline three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine generating 120PS and 172Nm of torque. Mated to this motor is a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

On the other hand, the Fronx gets a 1.0-litre, inline three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol unit producing 100PS and 148Nm of torque. It also comes powered by a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine with 90PS and 113Nm. Transmission options include a five-speed manual, a five-speed AMT, and a six-speed torque converter (latter only for turbo-petrol engine).

The Altroz Racer measures 3,990mm in length, 1,755mm in width, and 1,523mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,501mm, while the i20 N Line is 3,995mm in length, 1,775mm in width, and 1,505mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,580mm. The Fronx, in terms of dimensions, is 3,995mm long, 1,765mm wide, and 1,550mm tall. Its wheelbase stands at 2,520mm.

The new Altroz Racer borrows features from the Nexon facelift, such as ventilated front seats, a heads-up display, 360deg camera, wireless charging pad, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, seven-inch TFT colour all-digital cluster, six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), voice-activated sunroof, updated seat covers with contrast stitching, cruise control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight speakers, updated iRA connected car tech, and an air purifier. It also carries over features from the regular Altroz.

The i20 N Line facelift was launched late last year, bringing in subtle updates to the sporty hatchback. It features a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, OTA updates, a seven-speaker Bose sound system, 10.25-inch all-digital colour instrument clutser, 127 integrated voice commands, cruise control, sunroof, 52 Hindi+English voice commands and over 60 connected car functions. Safety features include six airbags, ESC, hill assist control, Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), TPMS, four disc brakes, and automatic Headlamps.

The Fronx comes with a range of features, such as LED headlights, an auto headlamp with follow me home function, a wireless charging pad, paddle shifters, cruise control, an engine start/stop switch, USB charging ports (Type-C and Type-A), nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six-speaker Arkamys sound system, built-in voice assistant, OTA updates, heads-up display, 360deg camera, ESP, hill hold assist, six airbags, and Suzuki Connect.

The prices of the Altroz Racer range between Rs 9.49 lakh and Rs 10.99 lakh, while the i20 N Line prices start from Rs 9.99 lakh and go up to Rs 12.52 lakh. Whereas, the Fronx 1.0-litre Boosterjet prices range between Rs 9.73 lakh and Rs 13.04 lakh.
