Specifications comparison: 2020 Hyundai i20 vs Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs Tata Altroz vs Toyota Glanza vs Honda Jazz

Hyundai has launched the 2020 iteration of its popular hatchback, the i20 at Rs 6.80 lakh. The first thing you notice about this hatchback from Hyundai is that the company has shed the word Elite from the model naming. This, we believe, could have something to do with the way the new design of the i20, which looks sharper and crisper than before. Additionally, the cabin design too has been made to look more premium with an array of features that goes beyond modern connectivity options. The 2020 Hyundai i20 is based on the new K-platform which has made it longer and wider than its predecessor, along with a longer wheelbase. Hyundai is also offering multiple engine and transmission options to spec the 2020 i20 to make it suit varied choices of different individuals.

Powering the base model of the 2020 Hyundai i20 is the 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated Kappa four-cylinder petrol engine. This unit makes 83PS with a 5-speed manual transmission and 88PS with a CVT. The torque rating, however, remains an identical 114Nm. Positioned above this engine is the three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbo petrol that produces 120PS of power and 172Nm of torque. Hyundai is offering this engine with a choice between the 7-speed DCT and a six-speed iMT. The claimed naught to 100kmph figure for the turbo iMT variant is 9.9s. And lastly, there's a diesel option too, the 1.5-litre four-cylinder U2 CRDi diesel that makes 100PS/240Nm and is offered with a six-speed manual transmission. Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Price: Rs 5.63 lakh to 8.96 lakh, ex-showroom

In terms of dimensions, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno measures a tad shorter and narrower than the 2020 Hyundai i20. Also, it falls short in some features such as cruise control, rear AC vents, digital instrumentation, etc. In terms of powertrain, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is available in two petrol engine options. Though the displacement is an identical 1,197cc, one is standard and the other is paired with a smart hybrid. The former makes 83PS of power, mated to a 5MT/CVT, the later generates 90PS paired with a 5-speed MT unit. The torque rating is an identical 113Nm. The claimed fuel efficiency figures are 21kmph for the MT, 19.56 for the CVT and 23.87kmpl for the Smart Hybrid version.

Toyota Glanza

Price: Rs 7.01 lakh to 8.96 lakh, ex-showroom

Considering that the Toyota Glanza is a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the dimensions and features are identical and so are the features list. Even the powertrain options remain the same as Toyota had launched the Glanza in petrol only.

Honda Jazz

Price: Rs 7.49 lakh to 9.73 lakh, ex-showroom

The 2020 Hyundai i20 maintains its lead over the Honda Jazz when it comes to length, width and wheelbase, however, the Jazz is a taller hatchback compared to the new i20. Also, the Jazz gets a marginally larger boot space. Inside, the Jazz gets a smaller touchscreen infotainment system and misses out on some features. Similar to the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Toyota Glanza, Honda is offering the BSVI version of Jazz in petrol only with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 90PS at 6,000rpm and generates 110Nm at 4,800rpm. There are two transmission options to choose from, CVT (17.1kmpl claimed) and 5-speed MT (16.6kmpl claimed).

Tata Altroz

Price: Rs 5.44 lakh to 9.09 lakh, ex-showroom

Among the hatchbacks that come close to the 2020 Hyundai i20 in features is the Tata Altroz. While the new Hyundai i20 has an edge over the Tata Altroz when it comes to most of the dimensions except for the height wherein the Altroz is taller by 73mm. Powering this hatchback from Tata Motors is a 1.2L three-cylinder Revotron BS6 petrol engine that makes 86PS of power at 6,000rpm and generates 113Nm of torque at 3,300rpm. On the other hand, the 1.5L turbo-diesel produces 90PS at 4,000rpm and 200Nm between 1,250 to 3,000 rpm. The only transmission option is a 5-speed MT unit.
