Strong hybrid car buyers in Uttar Pradesh can now save up to Rs 3.5 lakh

In order to promote greener vehicles and encourage buyers, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has announced a tax registration tax waiver for the strong hybrid vehicles. This initiative will benefit not only the handful of brands, which sell strong hybrid cars in the country, but also the buyers as the overall cost has gone down significantly.

According to the state government, the policy offers a "100 per cent waiver on the registration fee of strong hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles" effective immediately. The government earlier levied eight per cent road tax on vehicles priced below Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), while 10 per cent road tax was imposed on cars that cost more than Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).

With this, customers planning to buy the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Invicto, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Toyota Innova Hycross, and Honda City e:HEV will not have to pay a hefty registration fee. Customers are likely to save up to Rs 3.50 lakh on these vehicles. In fact, as per a dealership in UP, who spoke to CNBC-TV18, this waiver will slash price of the Maruti Grand Vitara by up to Rs 2 lakh.

Kunal Behl, Vice President, Marketing and Sales of Honda Cars India Ltd. told OVERDRIVE, "waving off 100 per cent road tax on strong hybrid vehicles is a milestone decision by the Uttar Pradesh government which will encourage adoption of these environment friendly vehicles. At Honda Cars India, we welcome this move, as it will undoubtedly attract a larger set of customers to join the nation's green mobility mission. This forward-thinking decision will revolutionise the adoption of sustainable transportation in the state. Customers can now opt for eco-friendly hybrid vehicles like our City e:HEV in more affordable manner. This is also aligned with our global commitment to sustainable mobility and our global vision of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050."

Since UP has become the first state in India to implement the new registration waiver policy for strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, other states may follow the suit in the coming months.
