Gajanan Kashikar Updated: April 18, 2023, 02:54 PM IST

Tata Motors will add a new vehicle to its CNG portfolio with the launch of the new Altroz CNG in India tomorrow, on 18 April, 2023. The brand showcased the Altroz i-CNG for the first time at the Auto Expo 2023 in New Delhi.

The suddenly rising fuel prices have led most buyers to CNG vehicles. Not only CNG is considerably cheaper and more efficient but also significantly greener than petrol and diesel. Therefore, most major carmakers in India, such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Tata Motors, are offerings more CNG-powered cars alongside petrol, diesel, hybrid, and EV alternatives.

Tata Altroz CNG: Powertrain
Powering the Altroz CNG is likely to be a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine making 88PS and 115Nm of torque. On the other hand, it is believed that the CNG-powered Altroz could produce about 77PS and 97Nm of torque. The hatchback is expected to five-speed manual transmission.

Moreover, the Altroz CNG could benefit from a feature that allows the car to start in CNG mode similar to the Tiago and Tigor CNG models. The key highlight of the Altroz CNG will be its split CNG tank setup. Unlike the traditional 60 litres CNG tank, it will boast two tanks of 30 litres under the boot floor section to provide more space for luggage.

Tata Altroz CNG: Variants and Colours
Tata may offer the upcoming Altroz CNG with a choice of a few variants, such as XE, XM, XT, XZ, and probably XZ+. The Altroz CNG is also expected to be available in one of the special-edition versions, such as Altroz Dark. Further, the petrol and diesel-powered Altroz is offered with seven distinctive paint options and we expect Tata to offer similar colours with its CNG version.

Tata Altroz CNG: Prices and rivals
The new Altroz CNG is likely to command a higher premium over the standard Altronz variants. Currently, its prices start at Rs 6.45 lakh and go up to 10.40 lakh (both ex-showroom, Mumabai). Upon launch, the Tata Altroz CNG will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno CNG and Toyota Glanza CNG.
