Tata Curvv EV, Nexon EV & Punch EV range figures revised due to new MIDC test cycle
In order to compare the range of all electric vehicles (EV) fairly, the Government of India (MoRTH) has established conditions for conducting the Modified Indian Drive Cycle (MIDC) range tests. With this, all automakers will have to make the range certified from these tests public.
As a result, Tata Motors has revised the range figures of the new Curvv EV, Nexon EV, Punch EV, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV, to adhere to the new testing guidelines, and these new figures show a decline in range because of the addition of highway driving, where average speeds have gone up from 19kmph to 31kmph, while maximum speeds from risen from 50kmph to 90kmph.
While the MIDC test cycle comprises two categories: Urban representing (P1) and Extra Urban (P2) representing city and highway driving, respectively. Until before, electric vehicles (EVs) were only being tested only for P1. However, after the new mandate, every EV manufacturer will have to test and disclose range figures for both P1 and P2 parts of the MIDC test cycle.
For instance, the Tata Curvv EV with the 55kWh battery pack promises a range of 585km according to MIDC P1 test cycle, which reflects driving in only urban areas. However, the new mandate, including P1 and P2 (city and highway driving), drops its range to 502km. This will be applicable to all the Tata electric cars.
"Starting 10 September, 2024, Tata Motors will report the range certified for all its EVs from MIDC's P1+P2 (Urban + Extra Urban) test", a statement said. The carmaker, with its C75 range disclosure, will continue to share the close to real-world driving range that 75 per cent of what the customers can expect to enjoy based on the data gathered from the Tata cars on the road.
