Tata Motors reaches 10,000 EV sales milestone

Tata Motors has now sold over 10,000 EVs in India, making it the first carmaker in the country to reach this mark. The homegrown carmaker is by far the largest EV manufacturer in the country, accounting for 70 per cent of passenger electric vehicles sales. In another notable step, the company sold over 1,000 EVs in August 2021 and expects this increase in demand for such vehicles to keep growing in the future.

The core driver of these sales for Tata Motors has been the Tata Nexon EV. The SUV has accounted for 20 per cent of all Nexons sold since its launch in January 2020 and matches sales figures of the diesel version currently. Tata Motors has since expanded its passenger EV line-up to include the Tata Tigor EV, also favourably received by buyers, and repositioned the low-voltage Tigor EV as the Xpres-T EV for fleet buyers. Factors accelerating the shift to EVs have been the rise in fuel prices and increased prices of combustion-engined cars, necessitated by the current emission and safety regulations, leading buyers to recover the added premium an EV demands upfront earlier in their car's life-cycle.

Tata Nexon EV, Tata Tigor EV specifications, range, price

The Nexon and Tigor EVs are powered by the firm's 350V Ziptron EV architecture. The Tata Nexon EV has an ARAI certified range of 312 km from a 30.2 kWh battery pack and is powered by a 129PS and 245 Nm electric motor. The Tata Tigor EV uses a smaller 26 kWh battery pack to return a 306 km ARAI range with the electric motor putting out 75PS and 170 Nm. Prices for the Tata Nexon EV start from Rs 13.99 lakh while the Tata Tigor EV is priced from Rs 11.99 lakh, before taxes and subsidies.

Tata Motors has a strong future line-up of EVs planned with over 10 models slated for launch by 2025. The company has developed an electric vehicles ecosystem using expertise from elsewhere in the Tata Group while with Tata Power, it has set in place a large network of over 700 EV chargers across 120 cities.
