Top 5 most affordable EVs in India

The Indian auto market is recognized for its low-cost vehicles. This is also true for the fast-developing EV industry. With an increasing number of automobile manufacturers entering the EV space, customers now have a diverse range of alternatives. Let's take a look at some of the most affordable electric cars you can buy in the Indian market.

MG Comet EV

The MG Comet EV is undoubtedly the smallest car on this list and that also translates to it being the most affordable as well. Prices for the Comet start from Rs 7.98 lakh onwards and go all the way up to Rs 10.63 lakh (ex-showroom). The MG Comet EV is powered by a 42PS rear-mounted e-motor and a 17.3kWh battery pack, with a range of 230 kilometres. The car doesn't support fast charging and it takes seven hours to charge from zero to 100 percent using a 3.3kW home charger.

Tata Tiago EV

Next up is the Tiago EV which starts from Rs 8.69 lakh and rises to Rs 12.04 lakh (ex-showroom). The Tiago EV comes powered by two battery packs: 19.2kWh and 24kWh, with a claimed range of 250km and 315km, respectively. An electric motor paired with the former generates 61PS and 110Nm of torque, while with the latter it produces 75PS and 114Nm. The EV gets either a 3.3kW or 7.2kW home wall box charger. It also supports DC charging with 0-80 percent charging in a claimed 57 minutes.

Tata Punch EV

Another Tata vehicle on this list is the newly launched Punch EV which has a starting price of Rs 10.99 lakh, while a top-end variant will set you back Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The Punch EV is offered in two battery pack versions - Medium Range and Long Range. The former is equipped with a 25kWh battery pack unit with an MIDC driving range of up to 315km. The medium-range car puts down 82PS and 114Nm of torque while the LR variant produces 122PS and 190Nm of torque. The 35kWh battery pack has a claimed driving range of 421km. Just like the Tiago EV, the Punch EV also has a 3.3kW wall box charger or a 7.2kW fast charger available. The Punch EV supports DC fast charging and can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 56 minutes with a 50kW DC fast charger.

Citroen eC3

The Citroen eC3 is next on its list with a starting price of Rs 11.61 lakh with the top-spec variant priced at Rs 13.50 lakh (ex-showroom). The Citroen eC3 uses a 29.2kWh lithium ferrous phosphate battery that is good for a 320 km ARAI range figure. The motor produces 57PS and 143Nm of torque. The Citroen EV can DC fast charge from 10 to 80 per cent in 57 minutes, AC charge at 3.3 kWh and charge from a 15A home socket in 10.5 hours.

Tata Tigor EV

Another Tata to complete this list is the Tigor EV which starts from Rs 12.49 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom). The Tata Tigor EV continues to be powered by a 26kWh LFP battery pack that powers a 75PS and 170Nm motor. Tata Motors has refined the drivetrain to increase range from 306 to 315 km. The battery pack continues to be IP 67-rated. As for charging, the Tata Tigor EV uses the CCS2 plug for fast charging that can replenish the battery for 0 to 80 per cent in an hour. Charging from a 15 A socket takes 8.5 hours to charge to the same level.
