Top five best-selling SUVs in India in Sept 2023
SUVs are dominating global markets, and India is no exception. Be it the sub-four meter or compact SUV category, almost all SUVs are in demand. While Tata, Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki rule the sub-compact SUV segment, the same carmakers alongside Kia and Mahindra dominate the compact SUV space. Here we tell you about the top five selling SUVs in India in September 2023.
Tata Nexon
With a range of powertrain options, modern appearance, fresh interior, and a variety of features, the Tata Nexon tops the SUV sales chart in India. In September 2023, it was the highest-selling SUV in the country with the sales of 15,325 units, reporting a six per cent year-on-year growth compared to 14,518 units in the same period of the previous year. Recently, the Nexon and Nexon EV received a facelift, bringing in a fresh look, revamp interior, a new dual-clutch transmission and a bunch of additional features. The SUV is available across petrol, diesel, and electric powertrain.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza
Following the Tata Nexon, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza was the second best-selling SUV in the past month, registering sales of 15,001 units as opposed to 15,445 units in September 2022. However, it witnessed a three per cent decline in the Y-o-Y sales. The Brezza facelift is offered in four variants: LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi Plus across a single engine and two transmission options. Unlike the Nexon, the Brezza also comes with a CNG version mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
Tata Punch
The third highest selling SUV in the list is another offering from Tata, the Punch. Not only is it India's third best-selling SUV but is also the top-seller for the brand. The sales of the micro SUV stood at 13,045 units at six per cent year-on-year growth in September 2023 compared to 12,251 units sold in the same month of the last year. The Punch is available in four variants. It is powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor paired with a manual or AMT transmission. Tata offers it with the new twin-cylinder CNG system, which provides more boot space compared to a conventional CNG tank.
Hyundai Creta
While the first three SUVs were from sub-compact and micro-SUV categories, the fourth best-seller in India is the Hyundai Creta. The only compact SUV in the list registered sales of 12,717 in the previous month, reporting a one per cent decline in sales as against 12,866 units sold in September 2022. This SUV has been due for a major mid-life facelift, which is already in the pipeline. The upcoming updated Creta will get a redesigned fascia, fresh interior, a new powertrain, and additional features, including ADAS.
Hyundai Venue
Another sub-compact SUV here is the Hyundai Venue. The SUV emerged as the fifth highest-seller in the country in the last month. It recorded an 11 per cent rise in sales compared to 11,033 units sold in the same period of 2022. The Nexon and Brezza rival was recently updated with a range of active driver assistance features, making the Venue the first and only SUV in its segment to offer ADAS. Not to mention, Hyundai has also made six airbags standard in all its cars, including the Venue.
Here is the bonus. Mahindra's popular Scorpio nameplate made it to the sixth rank in the top-selling SUV category. The Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic combined, reported sales of 11,846 units in September 2023. The carmaker had sold 9,898 units of the SUV in August this year.
