Volkswagen preps the 296PS 2014 Golf R for Frankfurt
Another car headed to next month's Frankfurt Auto Show has been announced. Volkswagen has revealed the new top-of-the-line 2014 VW Golf R. The R moniker holds a legacy and the fastest car in the Golf lineup only reiterates that.
The car is based on the seventh-generation Golf that debuted at the Paris Auto Show last year. Powered by the EA888 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder engine that comes from the S3, the vehicle deploys 296PS and 380Nm of peak torque. A 6-speed manual transmission or an optional dual-clutch assembly takes the power to all four wheels via Volkswagen's 4MOTION AWD (all-wheel drive) system.
The Golf R does a dash to 100 in around 5 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. The car returns efficiency numbers of 14-18kmpl depending on the transmission. The CO2 emissions are at 159 g/km.
The Golf R stands out owing to a new front bumper, air inlets, daytime running lights that are integrated into the standard bi-xenon lights, modified radiator grille with 'R' logo, body-colour sills, 18/19" alloys, black brake calipers with the 'R' logo, rear diffuser that integrates dual chrome exhaust pipes on each side.
Nothing much is known of the interiors though. "The interior features sports seats with a cloth centre section and Alcantara bolsters, while the instrument dials are bespoke for the R, and include typical touches such as blue needles," said a company statement.
