Who is Leapmotor? All you need to know
Leapmotor is reportedly planning to enter the Indian market, marking its foray into the electric vehicle (EV) segment in partnership with Stellantis, which already has a presence in India through brands, such as Jeep and Citroen. With this, Leapmotor aims to introduce affordable EVs in the Indian market.
An official announcement regarding Leapmotor's India plans in collaboration with Stellantis is anticipated soon. Media reports suggest that the announcement could come in the next few weeks. Stellantis, with a diverse portfolio of brands worldwide including Citroen, Jeep, Chrysler, Peugeot, Fiat, and Maserati, is gearing up to expand its operations in India, introducing new brands, expanding its retail network, and making new investments.
The stringent regulations imposed by the Indian government have posed challenges for Chinese automakers entering the Indian market. For instance, MG Motor had to form a partnership with JSW to comply with these regulations.
History of Leapmotor & EV line-up
Established in 2015, Leapmotor focuses primarily on mid- and high-end segment EVs. In 2019, it introduced its first-ever electric vehicle. The company's product lineup includes models, such as the C11, C01, and T03, all equipped with Level 2 autonomy features.
The T03, Leapmotor's latest offering, boasts an NEDC range of 403km with its 36.5kWh battery pack. Featuring Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), this EV offers fast charging capabilities, enabling it to charge from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in just over 20 minutes.
In late 2023, Leapmotor announced a strategic partnership with Stellantis, wherein Stellantis would invest 1.5 billion euros ($1.58 billion) to acquire a 20 per cent stake in Leapmotor, securing two seats on the company's board of directors.
