BMW 5 Series LWB 530Li review - The Business Sedan, Now Elongated
BMW has introduced the long-wheelbase version of its popular 5 Series sedan, specifically for the Indian market. This new model aims to combine the brand's renowned driving dynamics with enhanced rear-seat comfort, directly competing with the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Just before BMW India opened bookings for the new 5 Series LWB, we had a chance to drive for a couple of kilometres (quite literally) to give you some technical details. Do note that this isn't a full-fledged review and a detailed road test will follow in the coming weeks. In these pages, we will talk about the design, cabin experience and the initial driving impressions of the BMW 530Li.
Design & Exterior
A Familiar Yet Fresh Look
The eighth-generation BMW 5 Series may look familiar because it debuted internationally last year, but take time to arrive on our shores because they had to engineer an exclusive right-hand-drive long wheelbase model. In its elongated form, it still retains much of the traditional 5 Series aesthetic while introducing elements designed to enhance its luxury appeal. The kidney grilles, a hallmark of BMW design, remain prominent but less imposing than those on the 7 Series, maintaining a balanced look. The grille has a transparent lining that can be illuminated to add a touch of modernity (or bling).
Aerodynamic Enhancements
The car's aerodynamic profile has been significantly improved with a more chiselled front end and sleek headlight design. The new vertical DRLs are a departure from traditional designs, aligning with the latest BMW design language seen across their lineup.
Proportionate Yet Distinctive
Despite the elongated wheelbase, the 5 Series LWB manages to maintain its proportions well, thanks to design elements like the satin finish on the window line and the bold 530Li badging. The 18-inch wheels, while slightly disproportionate in appearance due to the car's length, are practical for Indian roads, offering a balance between style and comfort.
Interior Comfort and Features
Rear Seat Experience
The true highlight of the 530Li is its rear-seat comfort. The extended wheelbase translates to ample legroom, allowing passengers to sit cross-legged comfortably. The cabin feels spacious, aided by large windows and an expansive sunroof (the largest ever on a 5 Series), which contribute to a sense of openness. The seats, upholstered in vegan leather, offer excellent support and comfort, making long journeys more pleasant. But in this transition, BMW has removed the reclining functionality which is otherwise available of the global 5 Series, and one that we had come to appreciate in the 6 GT. The droppable and split seat design has been given the boot too all in a bid to offer deeper contouring and wider shoulder room.
Tech-Savvy Cabin
The interior is loaded with advanced technology. The curved displays for infotainment and instrumentation, along with interactive ambient lighting, create a futuristic and engaging environment. Features like the four-zone climate control and Bowers & Wilkins audio system ensure a premium experience for all occupants.
Practicality and Convenience
BMW has incorporated thoughtful touches throughout the cabin, including multiple USB-C ports, a wireless charging pad, and ample storage options. However, some features like the ability to drop the rear seats for increased cargo space are missing, which could have added to its practicality.
Driving Impressions
Engine and Performance
The BMW 530Li is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering 255 PS. While this setup might not scream performance, it provides a healthy balance of power and efficiency, crucial for a car focused on rear-seat comfort.
Smooth and Stable Ride
The initial driving impressions from a short drive reveal a smooth and stable ride. The car feels planted even at higher speeds, with brisk acceleration and a responsive transmission. Switching to sport mode enhances the driving dynamics, making the car feel more agile and engaging, despite its extended length.
Advanced Safety Features
The 530Li is equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Lane-keeping assist and other ADAS functionalities work seamlessly, providing additional peace of mind during long drives.
Conclusion
The BMW 5 Series LWB 530Li successfully combines luxury, comfort, and technology in a package tailored for the Indian market. While it may not be the first choice for driving enthusiasts due to its focus on rear-seat comfort, it does not compromise the driving experience altogether. The added legroom and luxury features make it a compelling choice for those who prefer to be chauffeured.
