The Ford Focus comes with a choice of a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which is also seen in the Ford Mustang EcoBoost. However, the petrol engine is in a different state of tune and produces 280PS. Whereas the diesel engine on offer is a 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine that produces 190PS. Ford claims that the new hot hatch produces 12 per-cent more power and 17 per-cent torque figures. 0-100 time for the new Ford Focus ST is less than six- seconds.

Mechanically the Focus ST now gets an electronic limited-slip differential for the front wheels for better cornering grip, however, the Focus ST with the EcoBlue engine is equipped with a torque vectoring system. The EcoBoost engine installed in the new Focus ST is equipped with an anti-lag system which was essentially developed for the Ford GT and the F-150 Raptor to ensure optimal power delivery when the hatchback is in Sport or Track mode. The hot hatchback is available with a choice of six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission.

For the first time, the Ford Focus ST is equipped with drive modes, Wet, Normal, and Sport. Above them, is the Track mode which reduces the electronic stability control intrusion and increases the response from the steering, brakes and throttle.

The cosmetic changes include restyled alloy wheels and honeycomb grille in the front. The rear gets dual exhaust tips and a new spoiler. Inside the Focus ST is a sporty steering wheel, Recaro racing seats and an ST badge on the steering wheel. The exhaust note is amplified in the cabin when driven in Sport or Track mode.

The Ford Focus ST is positioned in the hot hatch zone where the Honda Civic Type R and the Hyundai i30N have already marked their territory, not to forget the Renault Megane RS.
