2020 BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS spied: What to expect?
BMW Motorrad is readying their entry-level motorcycles, the updated G 310 R naked roadster and the G 310 GS adventure tourer for its India launch. Confirming this information are the latest set of spied images of the updated motorcycles, that have been spotted testing in some parts of Europe. The launch of both the motorcycles, we believe, has been pushed by some weeks due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. While there is still some time before we see these motorcycles in India, here is everything that we know of the 2020 BMW G 310 R and the BMW G 310 GS.
2020 BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS powertrain and specificationsIn its present form, the liquid-cooled, single-cylinder 4-stroke engine with a displacement of 313cc makes 34PS at 9,500 rpm and generates 28 Nm at 7,500 rpm, in both the G 310 R and the the G 310 GS. In case of the 310 RR, the BSVI update did not alter the displacement of the engine or the performance numbers, which could be the same for the 2020 BMWs.
The exhaust unit on these motorcycles have been updated, along with a larger catalytic converter, which we believe will be neatly hidden. We also expect BMW to offer ride-by-wire tech to meet the stricter BSVI emission norms, which also means that ride modes too could be on offer as on the Apache, enabling precise throttle response along with better fuel economy.
2020 BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS featuresWe saw TVS update the instrumentation in the updated BS6 Apache RR 310 with a new 5-inch colour instrumentation. It does pack in more display options than the basic negative LCD display of the previous model. The updated display changes its layout according to the ride modes, - Track, Sport and Urban, all of which made the Apache RR 310 a more feature rich motorcycle. We expect all of these to makes its way into the 2020 iterations of the 310s as well.
Our sources have already confirmed that BMW too will offer colour TFT instrumentation on the 2020 G 310 R and the GS motorcycles. We expect this unit to offer a lot more in terms of features and options compared to the one on the Apache RR 310, primarily because of the former's premium positioning in the Indian market. Also, these features should make the 310s a more well equipped rival of the 390 Duke and the 390 Adventure, both of which come laden with tech and features that are normally seen on high-end premium motorcycles worth Rs 10 lakh and more.
2020 BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS design
Starting with the naked roadster, the 2020 G 310 R. As seen from the images below, we don't expect the updated design to come with any changes in the dimensions as it retains its inspiration from the larger S 1000 R, considering this is a facelift. The highlight will be the all-LED lighting, with a redesigned headlight assembly that seems larger and also gets slimmer side panels. We also expect to have it a strong
The instrumental cluster design, beefy gold USD forks and the five-spoke alloys have been retained from the previous offering. What looks to have been changed or updated are the side panels and the tank design, where in the tank features sharper lines while the panels have been extended to sync with the tank design. Further, the engine and the frame that holds the rear pegs sports a new black shade instead of the brighter aluminium seen in the present model, that could also be seen on these test motorcycles.
The 2020 BMW G 310 GS, which has a larger profile than the roadster, gets similar updates in the styling department, wherein the highlight is the all-LED headlight and the sleek turn-indicators. However, the tank design and the side panels have been left unchanged. The rest of the design of the 2020 G 310 GS has been carried over from the previous model.
2020 BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS pricesPresently, the BMW G 310 R and the BMW G 310 GS are priced at Rs 2.99 lakh and Rs 3.49 lakh, ex-showroom respectively. With the tweaks in the design and additional features such as colour TFT display, ride-by-wire tech with slipper clutch and updated exhaust design, it is obvious to expect both the motorcycles to be priced at a higher premium. A similar set of revisions made the Apache RR 310 more expensive by Rs 12,000. However, it would be interesting to see if BMW Motorrad pulls out a surprise and drops the prices with all these updates, to make the 310s more appealing and competitive than the KTMs. Something that we have to wait and see when both the updated G 310 R and the G 310 GS are launched in the Indian market in the coming weeks/months, depending on how the Coronavirus situation is in the country.
