Five SUV/MPV rivals of Tata Gravitas seven-seater SUV in India
Tata Motors confirmed the name of its latest seven-seater SUV based on the Harrier, called the Gravitas ending the speculations of it being called the Buzzard or the Cassini. The Tata Gravitas that has been developed under the H7X project will be launched in India in February 2020, as mentioned by the company in their official release. We believe Tata Motors could launch the Gravitas somewhere around the Auto Expo 2020 that is scheduled to take place around the same time. Powering the Tata Gravitas will be the FCA-sourced 2 litre engine that is already doing duty in the MG Hector, Jeep Compass and also the Tata Harrier. The state of tune, however, will be different. Additionally, the Tata Gravitas SUV could also be offered with a DCT developed by Hyundai. Here's a look at the SUVs that will compete with Tata's flagship SUV.
Jeep Compass - Rs 14.99 lakh - Rs 21.33 lakh, ex-showroom
One of the main contenders against the Tata Gravitas will be the Jeep Compass that has already carved a niche for itself. Known for its premium design and capability, the Jeep Compass will be available with BS-VI engine options that is expected to get more premium by Rs 80,000 - 1.1 lakh across all variants. The same won't be the case with the Trailhawk version as Jeep has already been selling the BS-VI version of the SUV in the country. The Jeep Compass is available with a a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine that puts out 163PS at 5,500rpm and 250Nm of torque at 2,500-4,000rpm. The transmission options offered with this engine are 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The 2.0-litre diesel engine produces 173PS at 3,750rpm and 350Nm between 1,750-2,500rpm.
MG Hector: Rs 12.48 lakh - Rs 17.28 lakh, ex-showroom
MG's debut in India with the Hector has been successful with the popularity of the SUV in India. While the design has attracted polarizing opinions, the spacious cabin and the feature rich options have made a strong connect with the Indian audiences. The MG Hector is available with a a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged unit that produces 143PS and can be availed with an option between six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. Additionally, one can also opt for the 48 volt mild-hybrid. The diesel engine offered is the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit as the Jeep Compass and offers 170PS but can be had with the six-speed manual gearbox only.
Toyota Innova Crysta: Rs 14.93 lakh - Rs 22.43 lakh, ex-showroom
Toyota's success in India can be credited to the success of the Innova which then became the Innova Crysta. Reliability and durability are the two strong traits of this MPV which made it ones of the most sorted option in the country. While the manual diesel come with the lower-powered 2.4-litre engine, the automatics can be optioned with the 2.8-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engines. Toyota also offers the 5-speed petrol manual with the 2.7-litre engine.
Mahindra XUV500: Rs 12.22 lakh - Rs 18.45 lakh, ex-showroom
The Mahindra XUV500 is the SUV that set a benchmark back when it was launched in 2011. However, with the launch of new SUVs in the country, the Mahindra XUV500 has become dated. The Mahindra XUV500 is offered with a diesel engine (codenamed mHawk155) makes 155PS at 3,750rpm and generates 360 Nm from 1,750 to 2,800rpm. This engine can be availed with 6-speed manual or an 6-speed automatic transmission.
