650PS / 850Nm, 0-100kmph in 3.6s and 305kmph max speed - the Lamborghini Urus SUV has arrived!
The world know Lamborghini as the Italian automobile manufacturer that creates supercars for performance connoisseurs. And now Lamborghini will be making a comeback to the SUV segment, which has been buzzing across the world. The Sant'Agata based Lamborghini has finally unveiled the much awaited Urus SUV. The Lamborghini Urus was shown as a concept at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show. Underpinning the Lamborghini Urus is the VW Group's MLB platform that is shared with the current Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne. It was already know that the deliveries of the Urus SUV will start in 2018. The company plans to build 1000 units in the first year of production, and 3500 in 2019.
Thankfully, the production version of the Lamborghini Urus has retained most of the styling that was showcased in the concept model. It can also be seen that the 2018 Lamborghini Urus takes its design inspiration from the aero-friendly sports coupes like the Gallardo and Aventador. However, the Urus is taller, comes with an extra row of seat and also a trunk, all of that without compromising on the aggressive design theme that the Lambos are known for. The Lamborghini Urus measures 5,112mm long, 2,016mm wide and 1,638 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 3,003mm.
Stepping inside the cabin of the Lamborghini Urus won't be as glamorous as getting into one of Lambo's supercars since the SUV doesn't get scissor doors. Instead, it gets conventional styled doors. The cabin layout, trims and features, however, mimic the Lambo supercars with a combination of Alcantara, aluminium, carbon fibre and wood. In its standard. It gets a fully-digital TFT display unit with Lamborghini Infotainment System (LIS) along with an array of buttons. Additionally, it gets wireless mobile phone charging and voice control, CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity options and a 1,700 watt, 21-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system with 3D sound.
The Lamborghini Urus comes with 12-way adjustable DNA memory sport seats and if that's not enough, customers can also ask for the 18-way fully-electric front seats equipped with massage and heating functions. The boot space with the rear bench up is 616 litre that can extend to 1,596 liter. In terms of safety, the Urus comes equipped with PreCognition system preventing or mitigating collision with an optional traffic management systems and high beam assist and front and rear parking sensors.
One of the important features of the Lamborghini Urus is the Level 2 driver assistance that takes over with inputs to the steering and brakes as lower or moderate speeds. Still a long way to go before getting into the autonomous bandwagon.
Powering the 2018 Lamborghini SUV is a specially-developed 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 that has no resemblance with the one offered in the Bentley Continental V8 and Flying Spur V8. This motor, equipped with variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation, makes 650PS at 6,000rpm and generates 850Nm of torque at 2,250 rpm. All of that power is sent to four wheels with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Lamborghini claims that the Urus can reach 100kmph in 3.6seconds and will do a top whack of 305 km/h. The Lamborghini Urus also gets drive selectors that can be selected through the Tamburo (drum) driving mode selector listed under the ANIMA (Adaptive Network Intelligence Management) system.
There are three on-road modes: Strada for driving comfort and safety, Sport for agility, responsiveness and Corsa for precision and maximum performance. The three-off road modes Terra (Dirt), Sabbia (Sand) and Neve (snow) raise or lower the suspension along with alternating the traction responses, depending on the terrain the SUV is driven on. The power distribution to all wheels has a 40/60 split to the independent front/rear axle. The Urus SUV also comes with active torque vectoring through a rear differential. Carbon ceramic brakes are offered as standard on the Urus.
The Lamborghini Urus will be rivalling the likes of Range Rover SVAutobiography, Mercedes-Maybach SUV, Maserati Levante, BMW X7 and Bentley Bentayga. The prices of the Lamborghini Urus start at USD 2 lakh (Rs 1.28 crore, excluding duty and taxes) while in China, the SUV is priced at RMB 3,130,000.00 (Rs 3.04 crore, excluding duty and taxes). While the global deliveries are expected to begin from March 2018, we believe the Lamborghini Urus SUV could make it to India by early 2019.
